Storm season is upon us - here in Texas - its hurricane season. Does your family have a plan in case of emergency - what do do during different types of emergency, where to meet etc? Do you have emergency supplies in your car and house? Flashlights, crank radios, extra water, emergency medical kits etc? I guess its more winter storms that require the extra food...do you keep emergency supplies on hand?

Hi Artemis, I have a provisions cupboard with dried milk and eggpowder etc for if we are ever unable to leave the house but as in UK not to much diverse weather tend not to have a major emergency plan in place but all my friends and family know to try to make it to me. Huggles. Ellie :D

How practical of you -and convenitent for friends and family - they don't have to have a provisions cupboard - because you do. :)

I don't have to worry about hurricanes or floodng here in California. We have fires and earthquakes. I need to get together an earthquake kit and to figure out an eacape route for fires. I have also thought about taking a first aide class since I am a professor and I am constantly around people who might need help in the event of a disaster.

When I lived in SF and worked in Oakland - there was an earthquake emergency backpack under my desk - put there by the company. I did take first aid as it was one of the courses in Massage Therapy school. Including CPR but prolly need to take it again. I think its a great idea for you. Thats so neat that you're a professor - what do you teach?

It's just me....but usually I have enough stuff to last several weeks on hand....and I do keep a battery operated radio on hand....and candles etc....we are more concerned about big snow storms up here....occasionally we do get a tornado but my kids live in a neighboring town and if something happened I could go stay with them.

It hink its great to be prepared like that. And good you could go stay with them - and vice versa.

I am in the UK, and generally we don't have those types of problems. Yes we do have gas and electric problems, or even water problems, but because it is so rare that these problems arise I don't really have supplies in case of... maybe I should. I have candles if the electric goes out which does happen occasionally, but not often. I also have torches. If my gas goes wrong, and therefore have no heating, I have a halogen fire which is free standing and does give off a lot of heat. The only other thing that I would say I do, is in the really bad winter months (generally January and Feb, I do tend to stock up on freezer food, and tins etc, just in case we get snowed in, which did happen this year to me. I was stuck indoors for a week, and could not get out at all, due to the snow, but thankfully had food and drink to get by. I guess a lot of us take things for granted and tend to forget that things can go wrong, perhaps it would be a good thing to become a little more prepared.

Sounds like you do have supplies - stock of candles and in the winter food and water. One never knows where or when disaster will strike. Is a halogen fire expensive? Our electricity went out the other day due to a storm and we had to use our cell phones and my little ones twilight ladybug to get by! We watched a movie on my laptop. LOL modern technology. It remeinded us we need to buy more flashlights. I don't like using candles - I'm super clumsy and I have a three eyar old. your little one is adorable!
