Every night, like so many of us as we get older, find we are taking pills at bedtime.
And I'm no exception.
Now, all my pills are coming from over the counter meds at this time, but I've discovered something.
As my friends know, I've been on a diet for the last year.
Now, I've been stalled since Christmas
, but I'm not going to give up, because I don't want to gain the weight back.
Part, a BIG part of this diet is eating a LOT more fruit and veggies than I had before. Fine, actually, I don't mind this, its just that I'm lazy and would rather fill up on carbs than do them, but... I want to stay down...
so, back to the pills...
I have taken some Naproxen Sodium (store brand Aleve) and Benedryl (not store brand because of that old demon corn starch) for several years. I've discovered, however, that I now need to take an Imodium (as in one not two) along with the other meds.
I have to say, that I long since learned that one was all I needed 99% of the time anyway, but now I seem to have to take it as a preventative.
In fact, I've told the roomie that she needs to consider doing that too, considering the problems she's had since the surgery, but she's resisting.
So, have you found you have to change your medicine routine do to some other change in your life?
I discovered I didn't need the anti-depressants so much after I retired and got away from that toxic office...

I am on alot of meds, mostly prescription. I saw a new nurse practioner mon. & she wants me to get off my pain meds. that's easy for her to say she is not the one in so much pain. She gave me a prescription for pain patches. They were $40 , my pain meds are $7. That's a big difference at my house. If something is working why change it??

like they did to the roomie's grandmother, took her off her pain meds because they didn't want her to be addicted to them - she's 74 yrs old, and in PAIN - worry about addiction in YOUNG people, ease the pain of OLD people!
I tried pain patches, made me SICK!

That'a a crying shame they did her that way. That's what she told me that i was addicted to them. i think she's full of s___. I cut back to one yesterday just to see if i had any side effects & i didn't. I was hurting so bad i finally took one at four o'clock. She told me she would not renew my prescription. The dr. i was going to never said a word about them. I was just very unpleased w/him & his attitude in general. U are damed if u do & damed if u don't. GO FIGURE.

It is just that our family doctor told us long ago that we only have to take that when really necessary. If banana or apple could do the trick, refrain from the med, he said.

Hooray, keep that weight off....
I went off my prescription meds cold turkey almost four years ago and I find that I am doing just fine without them. That said, they weren't for anything seriously life threatening or it would have been stupid to do that.

I think that lifestyle changes can have a great affect on the medications that we need. I am resistant like your roomy..lol. I avoid medicine at all costs which is not a good thing really. I hardly even take an aspirin when I have a headache.

I only take one prescription med, the rest are vitamins. The script is for an overactive bladder, and I changed the time I took it to see if it would help me not get up so much during the night. It seems to help during the day, but not at night. I also changed the time I take the calcium supplement to evening. I usually have cereal with milk in the morning, and I don't want to take the supplement on top of that.
I also take a prescription pain pill for my back pains. I don't have them everyday, and I don't take the medication daily so I forgot about it. Maybe I need to take something for my memory.

hi ElicBxn I have to take two pills for my diabetes, three pills for my high blood pressure, one is really a preventative for kidney problems, one pill for my arthritis and one for my anemia, also I take a baby aspirin each morning for prevention of heart problems. my take is if I could get the pounds off me my doctor would probably take me off of some of the high blood pressure pills and maybe cut down on my diabetes pills. so now to try to cut back on all the carbs we are fed here.I do buy some healthy snacks but can only afford so much. but to my surprise when I cut back on my lunch with the tough liver and onions and the greasy oven fried potatoes my blood sugar reading before supper was just 100 so hurray if I can just keep this going I will lose some weight too.

Yeah, those foods aren't that great
the good news, the roomie's doc recently cut back on her blood pressure meds!!! and she's finding that her sugars are so good she's not taking insulin these days, makes her sugars too low!
you can do it too, just have to do your best to not eat those over fried things (that's never been a big problem for me, because I really don't care that much for fried foods)

Hey Elic! I sure know what you're talking about and you must
have definitely been on my wavelength just now! I was just
thinking before I read your discussion that I have to get off
my butt and take my "nightly meds"! I take a cholesterol, 2
blood pressure and 3 psych (anxiety-depression meds)! That is
quite a handful! That alone is depressing! And on occasion
depending on my own diet, I also take Immodium! And if I have
the pain in my ankle, Ibuprophen, 600mgs (doctor prescribed).
Great getting older isn't it!

I used to take an array of vitamins every morning but I recently revised them and cut out a few. I am on prescribed medication these days, antidepressants being one of them and I take the lot first thing so I don’t forget. I believe that it is a good idea to revise what we are taking and when because as life changes so should what we need. Good to hear you are not needing antidepressants any more...
