Some just cannot be contained

Advanced formal education is not for some individuals. I found years ago that some very intelligent folks just cannot be contained in the formal classroom environment. These individuals often prefer thinking for themselves, do nto appreciate being forced with senseless data and often end up in disputes with their instructors. Some of these individuals, I found, would not test well, especially in multiple choice answers! Did you know that several of our renowned inventors, writers, philosophers and educators were Self-Taught? Most colleges do nothing but regurgitate the same tired ideas and very little factual information any more. Some intelligent people would be much better off to get their own education than rely on someone else to shovel it into them.

"It appears they would rather that one not be that knowledgeable and/or assertive." I think you hit the nail on the head.

I agree; except that the system makes it look like one must have the paper degree to be considered credible (even though some very intelligent with the degree that are independent still find themselves in catch-22 situations). It appears they would rather that one not be that knowledgeable and/or assertive.

Yes, I know. Here at India there are some writers who are self taught. I favor them, they think something different, their thoughts are sometimes completely different then others. Well, scientist like Thomas Alva Edison , were self taught. If you wanna really wanna do something then there's no need of teacher. You can be your own teacher.

Yes, Edison and several others. Incidentally, without the invention of Self-Taught Mathematician George Boole, we may not today be using computers!

Of course. To only think that education comes from formal schooling is close-minded, ironically. What's more, is wisdom that most people cannot attain. ~~i'm tired~~ Peace.

Interesting you would mention wisdom aka common sense. You know I often run into some degree holders and wonderm how they managed to obtain their degrees, seeing most of them lack the most basic ability to reason? But again, as someone already said, commonsense seems not to be common.
