The Ethics of Pirating Music

What are your thoughts? Is pirating music ethical? Are we cheating hard working musicians out of their money?

Since it is not legal then it is not ethical! The pirating got a great influences in the huge drop of the sells in the music in the last years two, by other hand it is almost impossible stop that, so the artist will gonna have to find a way to stop the piracy or live with that, making money from their gigs. I always buy the cd's of the bands that i like, because i think it is a way to help them to keep with their work.

Def. Ethical: adj. Being in accordance with the accepted principals of right and wrong. syn: Moral Def. Legal: adj. In conformity with or permitted by law. Just because something is legal doesn't mean it's ethical, and vice versa. For one, "ethical" is a highly subjective term. I may think that the abortion laws in Oklahoma are perfectly ethical while you might say that they are not only anti-abortion, but anti-woman, inflicting further emotional damage on already traumatized woman and allowing doctors to legally withhold information about birth defects to any pregnant woman (http://abcnews.go.com/Health/okla-abortion-law-exceptions-rape/story?id=10507849&page=1). Secondly, there are plenty of laws that are either unethical or completely pointless. In Denver, it's illegal for a woman to wear a red dress in public after a certain time. Are you telling me that me wearing a red dress at night is unethical? And countries such as Saudi Arabia are plagued with extremely sexist laws that most would agree are completely unethical, just as the "crimes" they forbid are perfectly ethical (i.e. a man kissing a woman in public, a woman showing her face, a woman driving, and a girl talking to a boy). Also, there are lots of things that are legal that I would consider quite unethical, such as lying to your significant other or betraying a friend (also consider the over-asked question of "if you found a $100 bill on the ground/a briefcase full of money in the bushes and there was no one around to claim it, what would you do?"). I understand your position, but your argument sucks.

This is a very controversial issue. As a musician I can relate on many levels as well. I a way we are taking from the artists but more so we are taking from these greedy labels who are robbing these artists to begin with. Overall it does hurt the artist because album sales ultimately drop. On the other hand the art of pirating extends beyond the artists albums and when dj's put out mixtapes it is also considered an form of pirating. But it is also a form of promotion for many artists and has always been a pivotal part of the hip hop culture. And there was the issue of T.I.'s Dj, Drama, who was arrested for piracy when he was selling the music from his artists label on his mixtapes. When it comes to the real projects these artists put out though, we have access to download almost anything nowadays and there is almost no need to go to the store and purchase these albums anymore. Unfortunately this is the popular attitude nowadays. But I also think with todays changing times the artists have to develop other ways to market themselves and capitalize on that as well as there music sales. I don't know I guess these are just some of my random thoughts on the subject..

For my opinion, maybe yes it is not ethical enough to pirate a music,a movie and others. because it's definitely cheating or simply what they termed as stealing and therefor its a crime..it's just like you create a specialty dish.. and someone copied your recipe, cooked the dish and sold it to satisfied costumers.. its so unfair right.,does it makes since at all?? but as we see..because of CRISIS..people now a days would never choose to buy the original one paying much more when in fact they can have it in different ways much cheaper.. pirating it is more practical i guess, and maybe that would be one of the reasons why they do so.. it is cheating musicians but we could never blame the people that do pirate, and i guess there is no way we can stop them..maybe now, the musicians are the ones that create ideas on how to earn from their music..that again becomes another challenge to them.. that would be my thought about this topic..
