This is a photo of the sample jar of my homemade strawberry jam I made Wednsday nite. As you can tell from this shot it thickened perfectly and in about 2 hours time too. My wife evidently did not boil the water and pectin long enough it sems. So it looks like I'll be the jelly/jam canner in this household now. I used the timer on the microwave to boil and stir the stuff to the tee as far as the recipe called for. Now the taste was also better than my wifes........ How often do you can things you grew in your garden etc? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

That sure is some good looking jam, grandpa bob. I'm sure that your wife will not mind you doing all the canning from now on. Just make sure you clean up her kitchen and why don't you fix her some dinner while you are in there. LOL As for canning we can/freeze alot that comes from the garden. We will can tomatoes and green beens. We will freeze the brussel sprouts, squash and kale. Most of it will get eaten fresh but we always try to put a little away for the winter when fresh veggies are so high.

Actually I do most the cleaning around here. My wife works 12 hours a day 6 days a week and is not home at night for dinner so it's just dad and I most nights for dinner. I made pickles a couple years ago and still have a couple jars left. I want to try and can some spaghetti sauce and or salsa or ketsup from my tomatoes one year. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

I read that you boil the tomatoes quickly then run cold water under them to remove the skin. Never tried it but one year I am sure I will. Not this year though. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Homemade salsa is really good. My mom and dad's neighorbor own a construction company and have a few hispanic workers that work for them. They gave my mom one of the best recipies for salsa and it is relatively easy to do. The worst part is skinning the tomatoes and chopping up the hot peppers.

Yes my mother brought them from the country side. Fruits from the supermarket have no taste.

I have yet to try taters. I may plant some next year. I just dread the idea of the digging them up is all. HAHAHA! My red rasberries are forming and I'll have a lot of them as well. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Great job! When you're cooking things, sometimes you have to follow the recipe exactly. I'm glad you got it down now and can keep making jams. I would love to be able to make things like that and have even bought a few canning recipe books. I just don't have the time right now to grow everything we'd need.

I don't know how to can so I can't say that I do any kind of canning. Though I've wanted to try freezer jam if I found the right deal on strawberries or alike fruit. As last year Aldi's had 1lb pkgs for .49 ea and had I thought about it I could of made tons of freezer jam. Oh well perhaps I'll have the same luck later in summer?

Hello Grandpa Bob, it's been a quite while never participate your post because I am inactive more than a year and now I'm back very excited to make post and comment to all of my friends. Anyway, your good chef since then and always make things great with regards to your household. As you have mention you made the strawberry jam perfectly and better than your wife. LOL I love jam but strawberry not yet tried taste on it. I always made guava jam at home but some extent we bought it from the department store. Happy posting Grandpa Bob.
