To all English speaking Lotters...

what is the meaning of pigeon english? and what do you mean by slightly bonkersor? ... I am not from ENGLISH SPEAKING group.. and, so, I am a bit more confused than normal. ---------------hahahaahah. dear oldchem, thanks for pointing out the difference in the languages. Though I think in English, I write here in a different style. If you read my sentences in a profile page, it is different. if it is in a conference notes, it is yet different. so, we all have developed a different mylot language.

The only way I change for the non-English-speaking population here, at least the ones who obviously don't know English very well, is that I don't use contractions or more uncommon words as much. I started out simplifying everything I wrote but then realized that the way for the members here, who do not use English as their native language, to learn is by writing the way I normally do, only simplifying it a tiny bit. As for your "slightly bonkers" comment, I think we're all at least a little bonkers, aren't we?

No, I don't do that, but I do find myself correcting things in my head.

Well,i am not an English,actually,i'm a bit confused with Scottish and the American English,so with the old English of UK (referring to Happy Potter,the way they speak) My country is using the American standard,but i admit,my English is not good,and i am not also particular with grammar. LOL! - So glad it is not just me, I have actually found myself giving the equivilant in words in some of my discussions, because I know that some people especially American people have different words for things... Like for example - Hoover-I have heard some people have no clue what that means, so if I put hoover/vacuum then everyone can understand me Also more recently another one I did was Buggy/Stroller... as some people have no clue what I mean by buggy. But in general I think that my writing style differs from one discussion to the next. I am English born and bred, through and through, and my only language is english, but in my discussions, it can be quite bizzarre lmao!

by pigeon English do you mean slang or do you mean you are thinking part English and half another language? I don't really have a normal writing style or at least not one that I can think of lol. I'm not exactly a world renowned Englishman though so there ya go haha! I tend to think of my writing like how I would speak. Sometimes though I'll go off and start slang language it all depnds on who im talking about and what im talking about! -Scott

I think I respond pretty much the same whether or not they are native speakers, at least until they don't understand what I've said.

Hi there oldchem. I do respect all native and non native English speakers and members in myLot. For me, I sometimes use my own local slang in discussions but not all the time though. The best part about all users interacting is that we can interact and learn from one another at the same time.

Reading all kinds of English, pigeon or not, has some influence on writing in English. I'm not a native English speaker, but I work a lot with English. I have to say that it's a natural thing that happens. I observed this influence when I was obliged by my work to read bad English. I came to ask myself at a moment when I was writing something: is this formulation I made correct or not? So reading influences writing and as a good writer has to read a lot ... you can imagine! My advice is to read better quality readings in order to be a good writer!

Hi Oldchem...... I believe we all have our own writing style in English that affected by our original language or our daily slang language. I always try to understand what its mean but if not I simply ask the writer what its means and that will makes a good discussion too. I think in mylot we all have color and we all respect it . .

i don't think you're bonkers..maybe i am hehe.. well, we do want to get our message across. so most of us do adapt our writing styles to what we perceive would be understood..sometimes i feel it's unfair to do this when writing, but we wouldn't want things to be lost in translation but then again, how else can we better propagate good use of English if we don't encourage good grammar when we can..? aaah...it's one of those 'catch-22' situations, but in a good myLot way

I can't understand what you're trying to tell. But anyway, I can't speak or write in english well. As long as they are readable and understandable, I think its ok. We don't need to follow strictly on the verbs and adverbs, noun or pronoun.

Yes! Yes! I do that too!! I thought it was just me!! I do think it makes sense to consider what we write, to take into account those members who are writing English as a foreign language. So it makes sense not to use text speak or colloquialisms and to try to keep our English as "correct" as possible.

i believe that what happens is that we start thinking like that just like when we are around others that have a southern drawl or eastern accent for some strange reason after we are talking to them a while we also begin to talk that way. at least i do ive noticed.

I haven't found a great deal of difference in the way I respond no matter who is posting. Writing has been pounded into me since my earliest years and changing the methods is almost impossible. I do find myself running mental corrections, which is more than a little annoying. I would much prefer to read and enjoy instead of editing!

To me it doesnt really matter whether it is pidgin english or manglish,as long as the gist of the topic is understood ,just reply normally,afterall the ones who havent yet attained proficiency in using english for expression will improve a lot if they keep posting and reading the responses,thats how you learn and improve your language ability.so i try to keep it normal.

I have learned English for nearly 15 years. I tried hard to think in Native English while using it. My English is still not that good as I wish I should be. It is really a laborious way to learn language from western countryies which is totally unique from our perspective. It is much easier to learn Japanese as to Chinese speakers.

I do not make compromises and I will not pardon those who can write correct English but get tempted to write 'pigeon'!! English influenced by those whose mother tongue is not English. Neither is my mother tongue English but my exposure is such that I am quite comfortable with it!

pigeon english is a mixture of the queen's enlish and local dialects of foreigners.... practise ,more practise,non english speaking members' english can be pure. mylot does is the place where you can practise.....make the english dream come true.
