Getting tough on Iran. Imposing crippling sanctions. This has been the battle cry from the administration regarding sanctions on Iran. But now that the US has to sh*t or get off the pot, they have no heart.
Lawmakers are deciding on our own sanctions for Iran and companies doing business with them. Republicans want strict tough sanctions, Democrats want weak and loop hole filled sanctions.
Russia has said that there will be retaliation if there are penalties for them doing business with Iran.
The EU is concerned with sanctions for doing business with Iran.
Also in question is if these tougher sanctions will cripple the people of Iran more than the leadership. In my opinion, all sanctions will hurt the people whether directly or indirectly.
It seems to me, everybody is for the sanctions put in place by the UN, maybe they know they mean nothing. But not ok with the US actually enforcing sanctions.
What do you think? Should the US impose their own, tougher set of sanctions, or just keep playing the game?

Sanctions always hurt the people more then the folks who run the country.
I am not yet a beliver in our, the US, take on Iran. Maybe I am like those folks who are in denial of green house gasses. The rest of the world has a very different view of how dangerous Iran really is. There is no question their pres. is a bit of a nut but the international nuclear agencies do not yet believe they are now, or will be in the futrue, a threat.
I feel like we are being sold a bill of goods here in America about Iran.

I am not yet convinced that they are making a nuke. I think their current president loves the idea that we and Israel are so worried about it. And I think he has exploited that for years and will continue to do so.
America and Israel are the only two countries that really beleive this. I am not saying they are not but two past IAEA presidents say they are not making nukes and do not have the technology/equipment to make nukes. Both of these gentleman are convinced that they know exactly what they are doing it and where they are doing it. The Germans have been watching them very closely and also have doubts regardless of their relationships with the country.
It was a very big mistake to call these people Evil and set their president up with a major player to hate. We have bungled Iran since the 1950's and I am just not convinced that these people will really go down that road.
The Ayatollah, who is very devout, has stated in no uncertain terms that they will never build a nuke. In truth, this is the man with the power and control of the country.
There is an Israeli retired military general that was also deeply involved in national security that is touring the US right now speaking to this very Issue.
He is also convinced that this is smoke and mirrors on both sides and is not a real threat. He is convinced that this is game playing on both sides and that Israel is simply looking for a reason to attack.
Governments love to have scary countries to point fingers at make the bad guys and the US is no different. Our military industrial complex alone demands that we have constant threats, if not, how can they justify spending all that money. Israel must have a number of folks to worry about or all their forign aid would dry up. The US is not the only country giving big money to Israel.
The current speaker from the IAEA that was interviewed on Iran convinced me that this is not real. He made it very clear that the IAEA knows exactly what they and Korea are doing and in no uncertain terms Iran is not capable, right now, of making nukes. He was concerned about Korea but we are not getting all the information there either.

laglen,
I feel that USA's hands are bound here as the other council members namely Russia and China are not supportive of a FULL sanction.
It is a known fact that Iran is the main supplier of oil to both Russia and China which is life blood for these 2 countries.
This is what it means when we say that politics is really a dirty game and there is no such thing as true diplomacy in this game.
