We are a country that loves to go camping, and we have many beautiful camp grounds. But often people go to places that are remote. Right now I am listening to reports from just such a grounds that had a major flood early this morning and many are dead. We camped like this when we were a young family and so I can identify will all these poor people. Have you ever camped like this?

Like where you backpack or canoe in or something? Last time was Girl Scouts, 1968, I took a week long backpacking trip up into the mountains north of LA. Most of the campgrounds were not remote, but one of them was, the type where you had to dig your own toilets and bring your own water in and such.

I'll bet no one thought of flash flood? I know I will never forget to consider this when camping

We were nowhere near running water on this trip, but yeah you would think they'd consider this...

camping is a very enjoyable activity.I see that people all over the world go camping. Caravaning is a form of camping. When I was in England, I took my family to a cravan site at Filey, near York. We enjoyed it because the weather was good during that summer time. Camping by the river side in the remote area must be planned wisely. We don't go there simply because it is the most convenient time available for us.We need to consider the weather condition but flood is one of the unavoidable natural disasters...everytime I hear an accident, a calamity or a disaster which takes many lives, there is always someone in the midst who says 'it is a fate' to refer to the incident...God saved their souls, anyway.

I know people will say fate is at fault, but I find this very small comfort to those who have lost loved ones. I do try to always look for the positive of each and every thing that happens, but this is a lot easier when you are some distance away. The grand view is very difficult when you are hurt.

I've gone camping for a few times but I've only ever camped at state and national parks. I guess my family are sort of more cautious....or more bluntly, we are scarily cats. Even in national parks, my mother would be afraid that she would run into a bear so she would never agree to camping in remote locations. I think it could be fun though. It would be more legitimate and really getting closer to nature. R.I.P. to those people.

We camped when I was young and I camped when I was older, too. We never camped near a river although I always thought it would be nice. Dad said that it could rise suddenly, so quickly that it would take up by surprise. He wouldn't even camp near a little creek! He always chose high ground for our site and now I can understand why. We weren't in Arkansas or a place that routinely had flooding problems but he was always cautious and prepared for the worst. I feel so badly for those poor peoples' families.

dear pat, i have read about that too in the news and it is so sad people who wanted to leave work and do bonding with family would suffer like this. i can only imagine the trauma this event will give to these people. ann

Hi, Pat! When we were much younger, we did this a few times. It was a bit less than we expected it to be, so the fad ended quickly for us.

I hate hearing about tragedies like that, how sad…I haven’t been camping for many years but I do recall going when I was just a teenager and yes we did camp in remote places which was probably very foolish of us because if anything was to go wrong we had no one to help us but we did a lot of silly things back then like swim in the sea at night when it was completely dark and where sharks were a real possibility! It’s a wonder we survived!
