My daughter broke her foot

Well technically as she is still growing they are not too sure if it is broke, as it would have been a break in an adult, so it is being treated as a break. She done it at athletics Thursday night. She was doing her warm down exercises i.e high knees. She put her foot down heard a loud crack and her foot just gave way after that she could not put any weight on it. But what made me mad was that they still let her walk home on it and did not even call us to come and get her or even get a first aider to have a look at her. She come home that night in tears and you could see she was in a lot of pain. As she is not one to make a fuss unless she is hurting badly. The coach who was coaching her at the time is also her basketball coach at school When he found out what she had done he did send her a email to apologise and to see how she was as they were friends before he became her coach. We took her to the hospital the next day and she is now in plaster and on crutches. Which means that she is unable to do any sport for 4 weeks which is actually driving her crazy as she was always doing some sort of sport for the school and also does judo and athletics with clubs outside of school. So we are having trouble trying to get her to rest at the moment. Do you have trouble getting your child to rest when they have an illness or injury? Any tips on how I can make the crutches more comfortable for her as they are hurting her hands and wrists when she walks with them?

hi littleone3 my child is now 51 and when he was ten he got his knee injured at school as they were playing touch foot b all and someone stepped on his knee. it swelled as big as his head and had to be drained and he went back to school on cruthes . i tried to get him to stay home but he insisted. now he pays the price as it healed but its now got arthritis in it. i suggest you see if they can get her those fore arm crutches that make it easier on wrists and hands. good luck and hope she heals fast and shame on those who let her walk home on a broken foot. that makes my bad knee hurt just thinking about her pain.

Hi Hatley, I was also going to suggest those crutches! Wish they had them when I broke my foot!

Hi Hatley I will ask when we go to the fracture clinic Tuesday morning about the crutches. Thank you for your wishes. I have the same problem, my daughter insisted on going to school today I think she wanted to go to prove to her friends that she was not faking as apparently one of her friends was telling everyone she was. They do say that the knee is one of the most painful places to injure. I hope that your knee is not playing you up too much.

hi opal I did not break my foot but several years back ruptured the tendon in my left foot.letting my foot turn inward, my quack doctor did noteven know it and called it a sprain.by the time he sent me to a foot' doctor the foot doctor said it could not be operatedon so now am doomed to wear a built in heavybrace on my left foot just like the old braces for polio victims.

That is terrible! How could they let your daughter walk back on a possible break and not only that they are obliged to ring the parent/s if a child has an accident. I have never actually used crutches thankfully though perhaps wrapping something around the handle parts to pad them out may help her hands become more confortable and less painful? My daughter is only a toddler and so when she is ill or in pain all she wants to do is lay down so we have no trouble there. How old is your daughter?

She is 13. I plan to go up to the track when the next training sessions is on and question why we were not contacted. I think wrapping something around the crutches handles would help.

Hi Littleone, Healing huggles for your daughter, hope her foot mends well and she is soon back doing sport. I think it is disgusting they let her walk home and I would put in a complaint about this. Haveno ideas how to makeher rest though other than to keep her mind occupied with mental activities, maybe reading, watching dvds or doing jigsaw puzzles of some sort. I know when I was laid up as achild in a hospital bed for weeks I done no end of puzzles to keep me occupied. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi Ellie Thank you. I do plan to put in a compliant as I would not want another child to have to go through it. Am having a difficult time to get her to rest as she is such an active person. Thank you for the ideas but she is not into doing jigsaws and also her little brother who is 4 would come along and wreck them. She has been doing a bit of drawing lately so does has that to kept her busy.

I don't really have any wonderful suggestions for ways to make the crutches more comfortable for her. I sprained my ankle quite a few times when I was younger and the only thing that I can remember doing with my crutches to make them more comfortable, and even it didn't make them "comfortable". The only suggestion that I can think of to try is to line the top of the crutches with a sponge or a soft rag of some sort.
