Which favorite will be knocked out?

United States

We have started watching the world cup and some of the large teams have already failed to impress me with their performances so far. England need to wake up and work harder if they want to have any chance of winning this world cup. Against the US they played like a frustrated team that just couldn't handle it. I feel France will be knocked out in the group stages. They played badly against a 10 man Uruguay and South Africa and mexico both played strong in their opener. Group A in my opinion will be South Africa and Mexico to go through to the next round.

I also agree with you that France could be one of the big wigs to be knocked out. But, I do not think that they have had the favorites tag associated with them for this tournament especially after their build up to the tournament. I think most people agree that Raymond Domanech is one of the worst coaches for such a talented team. Well most, other than the French FA :) Amongst the others, England had a wobble against the US, but given the other teams in their group, I think England and US both should still go through. Cheers! England will go through but need to start playing better soccer if they want any hope of winning the tournament. What I noticed about the French is they are so strong on paper but the world cup they either play out of this world or they are useless. The World Cup after they won they lost to Senegal and if memory serves me they didn't even score a goal in that tournament. This world cup will be interesting to watch as the "big teams" are missing key players, Essien for Ghana, Nani for Portugal, Ballack for Germany and I am hoping not Drogba for Ivory Coast as that would hurt their campaign a lot. Thanks for the comment!

Portugal are in a really tough group and have even a tougher time now with Nani out of the world cup due to injury but one never knows, it all goes down to the way the team plays on the day.

Probably the one good news for them is the injury to Didier Drogba, but I think he will be back for the match, but not sure about his match fitness. Cheers! Ram

I was very impressed with Germany last night. The commentators were saying how new and inexperienced they were before the start but I think they could go far. Their ball control was so much better than England and some of the midfield passes just sliced through the Australian defence. Impressive. But the one thing that seems to be common in all the matches I've seen so far is the lack of precision in corners and free kicks near the goal. That was where Beckham was a master.

Set pieces are what will win you a game. I have no clue why England were slacking with these when Lampard is known to spend 2 hours everyday after practice to practice these kicks.

I do not think that any of the big teams in the group stages will get knocked out. I know England did not win but the USA are a decent team and got to the final of the confederations cup last year beating Spain on the way and only losing 3 - 2 to Brazil. I thought that England played well and apart from the goal keeping error played well. There is a long way to go in the tournament and tonight Germany play. I think that their group will be a hard fought group and not as easy for them as a lot of people think.
