Its probably on your RAM, how much is it? Also, defrag your computer frequently, like once a week. Also you might try CCleaner.

Virus might have infected your system or probably you need a higher memory. CCleaner may help clean up unnecessary files and programs. Why not go to your "my Computer" then to "Local Drive C", then "Windows" then see the "Temp". You can delete those on that folder. They are unnecessary. More or less, it is about virus. Well, it also go slow when your computer is also ages old.

If that is the case, then it has to virus that had infected your system. Your anti virus perhaps could no longer take it and kept scanning and scanning your system. Another possibility is that there are incompatible programs installed. As you admit, you had a harsh treatment with your computer. I think, you need to reformat your computer before it becomes worse. If you have games installed on it, you probably need a higher memory and videocard. Well, I am not an expert on this matter, but since I sometimes encounter similar problems, I was able to learn some possible problems. Better yet, visit a technician or ask for home service.

If you got enough RAM, a good processor, no virus or spyware, clean cache and temp folder, defrag your HD and you used a registry cleanner program, maybe you should consider format your machine and then install again your Windows, that will solve the problem. If not, then you got a Hardware problem and need to see what is it.

Download ccleaner to get rid of the electronic sludge that is throttling your computer's performance. Ensure that you always have at least 15% free space on your windows sytem drive (usually C). Having a virtual memory does help. Run a anti-virus program and a registry checker on your system. That might a lot. Check out the system requirements of every program you install. Chances are you might be overloading your system with programs not suitable for it. If it does not meet the requirements, you will have two options: opt for a lover version of the program or upgrade your PC's hardware. The lower version seems to be the cheaper option. besides if you don't know how to tweak the program itself, it might mean you just need the basic features of the program. I always find a freeware alternative to popular programs. Not only is it free, it is also lighter on my PC in most cases.

You can try booting your system in safe mode to check if you have issue with regard to virus or spyware infection. If your applications run fine in safe mode then it may well be threats in the computer that causes this slowness. My suggestion is you back up your files then do a complete reformat. Install a very good antivirus before putting your files back in.
