Once Upon A Child

So, like all (or most) mothers out there, we hate spending lots of money on clothes that our kids will only grow out of soon. And we hate it even more when the clothes they grow out of are like brand new. So there is a store that will buy your used clothes and toys and kids' furniture in cash. Sounds pretty good, huh? Well, I went there today (a 40 minute drive from where I live!!!, and I brought in TONS of clothing of many different sizes. I expected, at the very least, to leave with $60. I left with about $14. You have no idea how pi*sed off I was!!!!!!!!!! -o All of those clothes were in pretty fair condition, lots of them like new, and they didn't want but a few of them, and they gave me no more than $1.50 for each piece of clothing they took. So I ended up driving MILES away, hauled in all kinds of clothes, and I left with most of it. I was expecting to make more cash, and ended up wasting my gas and mileage. So on the way home, I felt so disappointed, I just drove into Goodwill and gave it all to them. (I did get a receipt for my taxes, but nevertheless, what a ripoff!) While I was waiting almost 2 HOURS for them to go through the clothes, I took a look around. Let me first say, the furniture was OVERPRICED, and I'm pretty sure they were brand new, because they had order catalogs in there. The clothes were all like new, and the prices weren't all that bad (I bought my 6 yr old 2 new uniform pants and 2 skirts for $20) but sometimes you could tell that they took advantage of 'brand names' and made them more expensive. So all in all, definitely not worth the drive to sell my children's clothes. And if it were more near by, I'd probably shop there. But BEWARE: stores like this take advantage that they are selling used clothes. They usually sell them for half of what it costs brand new, and give you half of what they'll sell it for. But, looking over the receipt right now, they jipped me off by a few quarters. DON'T SELL YOUR USED CLOTHES TO ONCE UPON A CHILD UNLESS YOU REALLY DON'T CARE WHAT YOU GET IN RETURN, BECAUSE THEY CAUSED ME NOTHING BUT A WASTE OF MY GAS, PATIENCE, AND TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure if this is a local thing, or what, but I like in Mississippi and we have something called a Sweet Pea Swap. It's held in an empty department store in the mall twice a year. You take your clothes up there and price them. So it's sort of like a big garage sale, but they only accept brand name clothes (so no Wal-mart stuff--more like Gap, Gymboree, The Children's Place, etc). You price it and you can volunteer to help organize the event and work it. It's SOO organzied! I bought so much stuff for my daughter on the very last day when they gave 25% off your total purchase! They do it in the spring and fall, and you bring clothes appropriate to the season of the sale. I spent $100 on all Gymboree, Gap, Ralph Lauren, etc clothing. About $700 worth of clothes for $100. I was pumped, to say the least. She didn't need anymore clothes for summer! I'm planning on putting clothes in the sale this fall, as well as get her winter wardrobe!

The travails of a mom. Sigh!
