Are your seventh graders having a (semi) prom upon graduation?

I just heard that kids graduating from Grade 7 have their own version of a prom, where most of the girls wear prom-like dresses, get their hair done and so on. Is this happening with your kids? It was a surprise to me when I first heard it. Wow, times have changed. And I guess I'm way out of the loop.

That to me seems over the top and extravagant. If you start this so young, then the experience when you are in high school is dampened, and you look for ways to best the prior "prom". There is a time and place for everything for a reason :) Our school has dances for the 7th and 8th graders. At the last dance of the year, some of the girls wore extra dressy clothes, but nothing that would compare to a traditional prom dress.

I think you're right. Having a prom-like event that early will dilute the high school prom experience. Kids are growing old too fast these days.

In our school district 7th grade is not a graduation from anything. My oldest just finished 7th grade, entering 8th in the fall, but will still be in the same school. After 8th grade he will "graduate" from middle school, and the following fall he'll enter high school. There was no big celebration this year for passing 7th grade, and I have not heard anything about a prom for the 8th graders, though I'm sure they'll have a "moving up" ceremony.
