I read many news about abusing in facebook. In my country, Indonesia, there are many victims caused by activity in Facebook. Girls kidnapping by someone who know her when chatting in Facebook. There are group of junior high school student harassing their teacher. As social network, mylot prone to be abused. Do we will be a victim? Is it possible to abuse mylot as they did in Facebook?

I guess what I would have to say is that I have had my own bad experiences in here. I also know one other person that had a very bad experience and was almost killed. Her husband is also a member here, and after things got a bit to bad in here the second time through PM's from a certain member, she left and hasn't been back. You can read some of her posts, just look up laceycyoung, and youngpatrol, neither will ever come back I don't think. Not after the last problem. She actually talked about some of the problems in her replies. I was lucky, it didn't get that bad for me here. I quit before things got to bad. She is a friend and lives about 1 hour from me. I would have to read through all of his replies, But I think he did give some tips to members about keeping information private. Its very easy to become a victim in here because a few members and I wont name names, but they have trackers in there profiles which can tell them sometimes our exact address. This is why I just accept friend requests without looking at profile pages. I also don't care for facebook because they ask for your kids info, and they ask for a full address. To me that is private information. I don't want everyone in the world seeing my address, and even seeing that I have kids, I don't know what type of crazy people may see that. Here in Mylot you can keep your state information private. That is what I do now, I see no sense at all in people seeing where I live other then the US. I think if we are careful, about what we say here in Mylot, and the info we put in our profile, then we will be ok. Because no matter where we go there are nut cases.

De_toya, I hope people do realize, that we never know anyone until its to late. And by then there is no going back. But do you realize that even people in prisons get to use the computers and go online? I found that out last year when they had a news special about scammers in the local prison getting peoples credit card info. Now do you really want your personal information online? Hey there Mr.R. What you doing? Seems like I haven't seen you guys in a long time. You need to come by and visit more often so then I will have 7 kids to drive me freaken nuts. Miss Lacey and you need to come by this July, 4th for the yearly cook out. Don't forget your brother either. he would kill you if you did. (I wonder what one cop gets for killing another cop over forgetting to tell him there is free food?)

We have a 'report abuse' system and the 'contact' link here and if ever there was a question of abuse, we can report it and myLot admins will act on it immediately. We are also an extremely supportive group and if/when any particular Lotter should have a problem, we all rally round and help out in resolving it. What happens on FB is not only happening in your country but in many others too. Tere have been some appalling incidents here in Italy too. I am of the idea that if we are careful about what information we place here in the discussions and on our profiles, we can avoid similar situations here though I know that sometimes people are not what they want us to believe that they are. Just being careful and reporting anything dubious should help keep myLot and it's users safe and secure

Mylot is different with facebook. Mylot is better than facebook in prevent abusing activity. But it is possible, isn't it? The bad guys always have the way to do it. When we realized that we will be a victim, then we can report it but how if we don't realize it?

I have read so many terrible stories about this type of thing on Facebook. But when I read some of the things my grandchildren's friends put on there I cringe - they are far too free with their information. There have been several incidents in the uK were young people have told their friends that they are having a party and the house has been wrecked by many strangers attending after reading it on FB!! Frightening really

You may be shocked as to how many people can find out your information in here, in fact a quick little thing to remember don't even give the same user name in here as you use in other forums and sites. They will find this information just by looking up your user name. They will then check every forum and every site for anything they can on you.

For all the wrong reasons people have, they tend to see things from a different angle. Together with bullies and the like I guess such people will always be around. We should be wise and alert enough not to expose our addresses and things like that. A little precaution can be just what it takes to be safe. Perhaps a little reminder too. Good topic de_toya.

Have faith and believe we have done and have done our best to protect ourselves that is how we should be de_toya. We shouldn't be excessively concerned otherwise we would come close to being paranoid and that is not going to lead us anywhere. I would love to be extra cautious too in the real world but should not be too fearful. Great topic and thanks for that!

MyLot tell us in the Guidelines NOT to post any personal information in the disucssion area. This is for our own benefit because the discussions are available for ANYONE and EVERYONE to see and not just for myLotters.

Hmmm...glad to hear that. Sometimes, one just forgets security and posts information on networking sites that might be abused by others.

If your afraid that someone will potentially use the information you have on your profile to potentially harm you, there is a security feature to hide that. This is a cold world we live in and its hard to believe that people will kill over a hot dog, but that's the world we have to come to accept. There is just to much information on the internet and the sad part is that it only takes 1/3 of what we put on the internet for a potential stalker to find all he/she needs. I think that mylot is not as mainstream as facebook or myspace and is less prone to these attacks. Here on mylot many lotters are friendly and helpful (I'm sure it has something to do with making money I dunno =) but honestly there are less personal attacks on this site. I'm not trying to say it doesn't happen because it does people name calling in the forums for example is considered a personal attack and is not only looked down upon but reinforced as a mylot law. I personally think these social networking sites are a great way to keep your friends and family informed on whats going on with your life. Like just the other day I uploaded a picture of my new kitties and instantly all of my friends were texting me with questions about the cats. Its sad to see people using these great technologies for such malicious and vulgar acts. Its also a little upsetting sometimes to think that the people who do these things probably know and trust each other. Well thank you for posting and allowing me to comment! -WickedSpies

I think there is a potential for abuse of everything on the Internet. However, if some common sense is exercised, then I think most people will be fine. I think that's where most people fail. There are a lot of good people on the Internet, but unfortunately there are an equal number of people who prey and abuse on those who they feel to be vulnerable to varying degrees. The thing is, on the other side of the Internet connection, it is hard to tell who can be trusted. I mean, the people you really have to fear is those who will get you to trust them, because they are convincing enough. Still, its important to just exercise your common sense. Be very careful about what personal information that you reveal.

I agree with you. There is a potential for abuse of everything on the Internet. We have to be aware even they are our best friends, always respond good thing in our discussions and pretend to be our soul mate. But it's hard to avoid abusing when sentiment are involved.

Hello my friend..... I hear that story about FB victim in news, I believe its because they believing stranger to much and lack of parental control to teenage. I believe in mylot we won't have a problem like that because we all try to act like a grown up person and know really well not to share our personal information. Did you notice how often teenager get updated in FB, they even busy to undated in the class room by they cellphone.

Al least not here on myLot but I have seen this sort of things happening on other social networking site, apart from Facebook. People inadvertently give their addresses and phone numbers and people not only took advantage of them but had put them into serious trouble. One should not develop a friendship with a stranger unless you have verified his credentials.

Thanks achilles, I understand. But all of my friend here are used to stranger for me. Now they are my friend even though just in discussion. It's possible to make friendship closer here. I agree with you that we should not develop a friendship with a "friends" unless we have verified his credentials.

Those social networking sites should impose a more strict policies on the usage of their sites. It is something that most social networking sites don't pay attention to. I think only mylot is a site that is very strict on this one

This kind of crimes are also reported many times in my country. QQ is the biggest problem here. Many girls were cheated, raped and kidnapped. But I should say piteous person must have something hateable. They seemed too stupid...I can't find another word to describe them. The cheated girls not only made their personal information public, but also went to meet a strange man they considered as boyfriend alone. How "brave" they were! More than that, some of them trust the "boyfriend" after they saw there wasn't only one man there; some of them even followed the "boyfriend" to road houses... The criminals who want to cheat and kidnap, they have many steps to do. If you care your personal safety only a little and destory only one step, you are impossible to be cheated. There's nothing wrong with the social sites like myLot or facelook, whoever being cheated only can blame him/herself.

To avoid such situation users should also take safety precautions. They should not post any personally identifying info. They should also not believe strangers to the extent that may create problems. In most of the cases like these there is some fault by user also. Everything can be used in a good or ill way in this world. It depends on the users how they use it.

Sure! You won't give any personal information to a stranger but if your friend ask you, will you refuge? If bad guys pretend to be good person, always respond to your discussions and claim that they came from the same country with you. Won't you give your personal identity to them? They won't do it careless! They will do it very carefully and more patient. Wait for a good chance.

It is terrible the things that have happened through people meeting on facebook, but here on my lot there are things that are a lot different to facebook. The main thing is, unless you actually give people your personal information there is actually no way that they can contact you, unless I guess you get your account hacked but I would say the chances of that happening are pretty slim.

I think it isn't impossible to abuse mylot, indeed it's more difficult rather than in facebook. They will take more time to do it. First, they might pretend as good person, become our good friend and when we are think they are good, they catch us from behind. What do you think about my thought?
