This can be true but there are many many things you can do to reduce the risk. Make sure you're running several anti-spyware/anti-virus programs. Use a firewall. Use FireFox instead of Internet Explorer. Oh, and join the more reputable programs. The better programs do a good job of keeping the potential nasty sites out of the surf rotation.
