Setting up a graduation present

My niece graduated from High School this year and will be going to college in the fall. We don't normally buy presents for all the nieces and nephews because there are so many of them. But for graduation we decided to buy my niece a laptop for college. I bought my laptop from dellauctions and really like it. So last week I bought almost the same laptop for my niece. It'll be delivered tomorrow and I'll have until Saturday to get it ready for her. There's absolutely no software on the computer - other than the operating system - so I'll be adding a virus scan program (McAfee) and Microsoft Office (I only have an old version, but it'll work). My main problem is that I wont be home after work any of this week and her graduation party is Saturday. It looks like I'll be staying up late to get it running, but it's well worth it! Do you often by gifts that require "assembly"? If so, do you get it ready or just give it the way you buy it?

MacAffee is notorious for the viruses it attracts and there was some scandal recently about its inventing viruses to get new customers. I have my doubts about the second story but I have long suspected they and Norton use such tactics. I use Panda Cloud. My son fixes computers and uses that exclusively for people he doesn't want bringing their PCs back to him for cleaning. You never have to update it, it does that constantly, and it never bothers you. Panda Cloud stops things before they infect your computer. It's also free. You should consider it rather than a commercial antivirus program.

We use Kaspersky at work and it's HORRIBLE! It locks up all of our programs all the time. We have to shut it down during the day so that we can actually get work done. It's kinda worthless if you have to shut it down. I have used McAfee for over 15 years and have had absolutely no problems with it. It's very user-friendly and has served me very well.
