I don't but my husband and my step-dad do when they know what to do which is most of the time. I usually buy the needed parts and my husband or my step-dad can put them in. There are only a few things they won't do such as changing the timing belt which is takes a lot of time.

I always did my own servicing on my old cars. I would also change the brake pads and the shocks absorbers. In the old days... it was easy. Almost anyone could have a go. When you opened the bonnet... there was almost enough room under there to drop a second engine in the bay. Then... they started to make the cars smaller. Not only that space shrinked... but they added things to the engine... like electric fans, power steering, air conditionned, anti-pollution canisters with lots of pipes... Then came fuel injection and turbo to add to it... not to mention the computerised items to manage them. If you buy a new car today... and open the bonnet... you would not know where to start. Probably takes you half an hour to figure out where everything is... just to do the servicing. And once you find those things... you wonder how the heck you are going to find the room to put a spanner in there. It is not only us. What mechanics could do in an hour 20 years ago... it know takes them 3 hours to do the same job. The money we save on gas by driving a smaller car... we spend it in the garage... only it cost us three times more that what we have saved on gas.

My hubby do most of the work on the car. We can save the money that way. Major problems, we take it to the shop but most of the problems, my hubby can fix it with the tools he got!

My husband does some work on our cars. He will change the brakes and brake pads. Major work we have done at the garage per my request. I don't need any surprises.

I have my dad work on my car, or other relatives and friends. I can do some things myself too.
