Before DSL i was using Lan based internet which definitely needed a strong firewall and thankfully it prevented me from various attacks from my own network.but now the case is different which mean's i only have to prevent myself from external attacks, intrusion etc. but i am keen to remove the firewall thing because the lack of memory i get on my pc due to smaller ram 256 Mb in windows xp along with avira free AV... or else i would go for other then Outpost-Firewall which i already have but it takes moderate resources of my precious memory i need for several task.it would be better if you also suggest me any effective but lightest firewall.? thanks

i found this somewhere else.. (because i dont use light source firewall) Kerio 2.1.5 is one of the lightest firewall. Uses about 4 MB RAM Although it is no longer officially supported by the makers of Kerio, there is a great Kerio 2.1.5 support forum at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/kerio to help and guide you if you have any problems. It is availible for free at: http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page7.html

I am amazed XP even runs in 256 MB. YES you need a firwall, all the time. Buying more memory is way cheaper than cleaning up after a hacker attack. Alternatively, get rid of Windows altogether and install Ubuntu instaed, free download

Thats true having spent money on more memory is far better then losing precious data..

Have you tried comodo internet security? firewall is a good thing to keep. Well it's up to you if you want to turn it on or turn it off but my suggestion is turn it on so that no intruder can go into your network and attack you. Comodo is a free software just try to search it, but I still use the windows firewall :)

Yes i have used comodo but it also takes a bit as well,so i am not happy with anything which steals any space from my 256 memory, moreover i need to tell you that the router i am using zxdsl 831 already have activated firewall which i am not sure is enough to protect my pc.on the other hand i don't have enough money to buy a new ram, therefor i am confused.
