Altering Physical features...

The other day there was a TV program on some celebrities' trysts with Plastic Surgery to alter their physical features to suit their idea of beauty. The case of one celebrity woman was so pathetic in that she had altered herself so much and so many times to suit her husband's fancy that she has become so very ugly to look at. That is when one comes to believe in accepting what God had given in the first place. Personally, I do understand and accept the need for enhancing self-image by manipulating the features, if necessary. But then, here one must do a lot of thinking and choose to touch up only one or two of those aspects of physical features, that one thinks is not right! But going for too frequent readjustments Botox injections for instance.,doesn't make sense. It doesn't make any sense at all to do so much in excess as to spoil what is there by nature. What do fellow mylotters think? Do you think it is necessary to go for Plastic Surgery? If so, for what reason? Would you go for any repeat operations(not applicable to the procedure itself being a multi-sitting one.). Or do you think that going for one itself is a travesty of Nature/God's will etc.,?

Maybe going for plastic surgery is a fulfillment for some that's why they engage in it. It really depends on the person. If plastic surgery boosts their confidence and self-esteem then there's nothing wrong with it.

This is the place where I seem to agree@pinoyblogger! If one gets a boost to one's confidence by plastic surgery I too don't see what is wrong with it, esp. since it is available and if within reach. There is however no point stretching one's finances for it. It would be more enriching to work at one's self-image in other ways that would have a permanent impact. @ LetranKnight: It is really the most enriching thing to take what God has given even if it were a physical deformity, worthy of correction- like, if, by some miracle a barbituarate-consumption-in-pregnancy-induced no legs-no arms person, found a Jesus by touching whose robe or even wanting to touch with tears in eyes is miraculously given both of them, how he/she would rejoice!?! But this person who is happy the way he is, is really bearing the Lord's mild(!?!) yoke rather admirably. One must look up to him/her. Contrast this with the celebrities stance. But I am able to sympathise with them also, as I shall be resonding to another of my myLot friend who has posted further down!

Yes, it is indeed fulfillment on their part but unfortunately, some people simply lacks appreciation to their own god gifted features. there was a guy with out arms legs, but still he enjoyed his life. i don't know about these people but i think life in the 80's was a lot better because plastic surgery isn't even allowed.

Who we are spiritually is the most important thing. Since I only see myself in a mirror maybe a couple of times a day, I don't have a problem. If the world doesn't like the way I look, isn't that really their problem??? Besides, if you touch someone spiritually, they quit looking at you physically. They see you as you.

If one has ceaseto be disturbed by his physical self and had linked to his spiritual self then he had already risen above. Sure such a person will exude a kind of spiritual attraction that will as you say transcend all that his/her physical relity has to oofer. But these are the rarer kind aren't they?

People who have disfigured faces due to burn injuries or due to accidents should only go for plastic surgery so that their faces or bodies will regain some of their original looks.Otherwise it is better to let Nature take its own course.Only vain or narcisstic people decide to change their looks and keep looking younger but they don`t realize that however much they try one day or the other they are going to look old and then they will look haggard and weird. One should age gracefully because that is how one should go from youth to old age, the natural way.Look at Michael Jackson, what did the countless plastic surgeries do to his face? He looked like an alien from another planet. He was much better looking when he was his natural self.

Your first reason- I am very much in agreement. There can be no two opinions on it. In good ol' days when such alternatives were not available, one was forced to live with what they have been destined and there were many who achieved a higher spiritual evolution because of the circumstances they were thrown into. But today they have a choice. I do not agree that only narcissistic people go for PS. For nacissists their psychological make up after that fashion is sufficient to keep up their image. On the contrary it is those who feel inferior about themselves in some way only go for such alterations. And if helps them build a better self-image why not? of course someone who is endlessly submitting to the surgeon's sclpel is only to be pitied. He is doing it because he/she has more money at his/her disposal!

I don't think its some travesty of nature, I just think it a) dangerous because when doing surgery there are always risks, and b) a travesty to myself. To get to the point of surgically altering yourself seems to me like your chasing a ghost. I mean, if you get to that point, then you must not like yourself very much. If you have such a problem with yourself that you don't like yourself very much, then changing your appearance not only doesn't solve the problem, it may make it worse. You will be constantly chasing that perfect image and never be happy with what you have. If you want to be happy, then accept yourself for who you are.

I agree with you.Chasing a perfect image without having an idea of what it is like for oneself will lead to what you have rightly pointed out as chasing a ghost. What if a person has a clear cut idea of what he/she considers beauty is, and has a PS willing to, with infallible expertise with his scalpel, that he/she can gift the seeker/client the image? Will it happen in that instance aslo that he/she will be chasing a ghost?

Hello there, I believe some celebrities really do have to create a make over better than the spa, cosmetics and not even a make up artist can do, and that is the plastic surgery. i have seen these people alterned their faces and bodies over and over again. trouble is that once you did it, there's no turning back. the real reason for that is poor confidence to one self.

Now, the question before me is whether this attitude of celebrities is justified. Not that they would care. It is instructive to go into what prompts them to go for such exercises. They esp. the actresses, would feel "physical beauty" is an importnat attribute their saleability. More so in countries like India. So, their being under such pressures is understandable. And I also agree that, if the insecurity or inadequacy feeling has seeped into their personality any amount of modification of features is of little use.

I agree for plastic surgery if a person has to change something in his look that needs to be improved. Something like ugly on his/her part that needs to be done then if not no need to change what God has given. Sometimes renovation of our body parts lead to some serious consequences which may lead to deformities and more fatal results.

Hi Gadhi In some cases like cleft, and some permanent damage or loss of any organ, plastic surgery is needed to fix the damage or loss of organ Like, so many children will be having cleft and some people due to the accident or by birth, do not have proper organs or even if they have,it will be under grown. To correct all these physical damages, it is necessary to undergo plastic surgery

I fully agree. Whatever is a medical/anatomical necessity must be encouraged. In fact I would say P-Surgeons must pull down the cost of such things voluntarily or by getting it cross subsidised by beauty enhancers of the celebrity or filthy rich kind. If you remember vathsala, PS was "born" in India and Sushruta the famous surgeon circa 2nd century BC performed reconsructive surgery for people with severed noses and ears, which was a popular form of punishment for the criminals in those days!

No matter how ugly it is, it's the truth. It's what makes them happy so we just have to let them be.

Altering physical features in human for aesthetic purpose is no for me. I believe that by the time I decide to change something in me, it will not be anymore. However, plastic surgery is still necessary for medical reconstructive purposes. the technology helps rebuild destroyed tissues in skin after an unpleasant event such as accident like fire.
