Hacked wireless

A few days ago I noticed that my laptop failed to connect to the internet. Then I noticed my SSID (name of the wireless network) has changed and the password too. My old simple WEP encryption was changed to superior WPA2. So I opened router settings and many things there were changed too. Manual restart was disabled, router firewall disabled etc. Somehow I managed to fix it.
I put WPA2 password with 63 totally random characters. No words can be found in dictionary.
I enabled firewall, hid the SSID, changed administrator password on router and enabled MAC filter so the only computer that can connect to my wireless network is my laptop.
Sure you can go around all those security measures but it won't be that easy. It was reckless from me to use laughably weak WEP encryption just because I assumed that none of my neighbors could hack it. And I was lucky that the hacker just wanted to show that he can do it and changed things. Because I would never know somebody's using my connection if he just used cracked pass to surf the net.
So here's a few tips that you should do to protect your wireless network.
- never use wep. It's very easy to crack it. Any kid can do it.
- use WPA encryption with password that is at least 20 characters long. It should be random. Never use words that can be found in dictionary.
