I would have to say that it depends on what the crime was and the circumstances surrounding the crime. Also, it would depend upon whether or not it was a repeat offense or an escalation of a previous offense, such as the person was arrested for stealing or shoplifting, went to jail, got out and then was arrested again for armed robbery. That would suggest that not only did they not learn their lesson the first time but also they are getting more aggressive and violent. If they served their time and are now trying to make better decisions, on the other hand, then why should I hold it against them?
Similarly, there are many people out there that have committed the same or even more serious crimes than those that have been in jail or prison, but some of these people were never arrested or convicted of their crimes. Why should they be treated any better than the people that did the same thing but actually had to pay for their crimes? Should their luck or skill at not getting caught entitle them to better treatment than someone that has paid for his or her crime and is now trying to live a better life?
