Question about cell phone charges

Okay, here is the scenario. If I want to go from Los Angeles across the Mexican border, along the way on Los Angeles, my cell phone charge still go with my original plan as it is, 1,000 minutes, free weekend, and free after 9:00 P.M.. So, if I drive across the border of Mexico, would the minute charge become international charge at the moment if I use my cell phone? I just worry to use my cell phone if I cross the border and someone call me at the moment. Should I buy a sim card from the local cell phone stores in a cheaper rate?

You are going to be charged the moment that your cell phone hits an international tower at the international rates. If you plan to be close to the US Mexico border, turn roaming on your cell phone to "OFF" and purchase a SIM card and phone using a Mexican cell phone company. If you plan to use your phone in Mexico, call before you leave for your trip and make sure your phone is provisioned for international roaming and you have the information you need to make and receive phone calls while in Mexico

You can also find information about international dialing on a cell phone by going to your providers website/international - for example if you have AT&T, you'd do wireless.att.com/international
