Hi this is for all you out there who did carry or at present carry your lunch box- what were mostly the contents? For me personally as a student till I reached class7th I carried a dry lunch box consisting of bread sandwiches and some sweets or at times a chapati ( Indian wheat flat rolled bread) and some dry vegetable curry at times some rice with daal( lentils curry)& when there was absolutely time limitations for my mother many a times it was plain bananas sliced with a little curds or mixed and either sugar or salt-pepper added and chapatis!! when I reached 6th/7th class I stared carrying a 2-3 tier lunch - case and with some chapatis, rice and a veg gravy; from 8th class till I left school( that time passing out was 11th Standard and not the 10th like at present) I used to walk home fore lunch as I stayed about 15 min walking from the school and we had an hour lunch break. When I started working I carried again a dry lunch box if I commuted by public transport - after my marriage prepared by my wife & a normal 2-3 item-ed lunch in a3 tier lunch case if using my vehicle. Food was always typical Indian traditional Of course much later when the Chinese meals etc became popular I started carrying home made Chinese meals or Italian /Continental type - but always vegetarian. What about you ?? do you prefer home made food, outside food or what available in your office dining rooms/cafeteria???

in my line of work where eating is the least important, i dont carry any meal because even if i have a meal with me, i dont have the time to eat it because my priority is our patients. some watchers of our patients are so demanding that we dont have time to eat anymore. some of us are so tired that we have to absent because we get sick just like our patients. i hope that this will be changed. i hope that they will let us eat also just for 15 minutes because we are human we need energy to get our work done. how can we care for other people if we cant take care of ourselves. i hope that watchers of patients will be understanding also to nurses because we always understand your needs and we cant attend to that if we cant focus to our work because our mind and body has not eaten yet.

Hi Though you have not mentioned it, from your response I understand that you are a doctor or someone in the health care profession; but then I am sure, that you should definitely know more than us laymen, that not eating can lead to more problems. I think if you all come together and speak about this to your seniors or authorities then they will do something about this. All the Best.

than you for understanding my profession. you are a nice person to understand what we are going through right now. we had a meeting yesterday and i raised this issue with them but they said, we should find a way to have a time to eat. we are all discouraged and so disappointed, it makes me want to resign as a nurse.

I did not bring lunch-box when I studied at university or school. Because in my country, I only have to studied half a day in the morning or in the afternoon. So that I did not bring lunch-box. I want to bring lunch-box like another friends in the world and I want to share my food with my friends. But I don't have any chance to do that.

Hi like me - and most of the Indians, they prefer to carry lunch boxes only when they are too young or distance too far to walk or commute home from the school for lunch in the one-hour lunch break!!!

I have fond memories of carrying my lunchbox to school. I was not partial to school lunchess. I much preferred what I brought instead. I would bring a sandwich, fruit, cookiess, chips and something to drink. I never brought aanything that needed refrigeration. There's nothing worsse than the smell of something spoiked in your lunch. You have to think about how much time will go by before you eat lunch from your lunchbox.

Hi I rarely carried fried chips etc - reason was that it made me thirsty and again hungry within a short time. And yes you are right, whatever needed refrigeration was never carried, by anyone taking lunch boxes those days as well as now for reasons you gave.

Rice made me feel sleepy- and did not want to add to that with some of the already boring lectures!!! So naturally avoided that unless the school was getting over earlier than usual or the classes after lunch were interesting for me.

hi udayrao2 I brownbagged it as I had no lunch box. But I had two plastic containers and put frozen vegetables in one, and a meat sandwich or tuna sandwich or cheese sandwhich in one with a piece of fruit of some kind. sometimes in stead of a sandwich I would bring a frozen dinner and nuke it in the staff room microwave. It was more healthy for me and cost less than going out to eat. I only had one half hour for my lunch so this was the best way to do it. I made it to fit my diabetic needs so it would keep my blood sugar down where it belonged.

Brown bagging is difficult for most Indian students- these days as well as in the past- reason being that students already are burdened with a lot of text and exercise books besides the compass box etc and then one can carry only hard plastic/metal boxes - a brown bag will tear in no time with all the pushing, moving etc going on with the bag. Do you mean that you had diabetes from young age?? sorry for that

It was always egg sandwiches. I ended up sharing with a friend and had a chance to eat from his lunch box which was quite exciting because the menu changed regularly. Not now but when I was in school. I stopped carrying one the moment I started working. I didn't want to feel bad for not appreciating, for not being grateful for the lunch box I had when I was in school.

Hi very very rarely - something like once maybe in 3-4 months I also took egg sandwiches and loved them. But the regular sandwiches I carried and loved were the cucumber, or tomato, green chutney, even cheese (sliced by hand not the ready type available these days). I think I liked best the cucumber or cheese, and at times the green coriander - with a little grated coconut - a little pungent chutney which we Indians traditionally make.

Tiffin good for carrying food. - Carrying food in tiffin is better, since i guess it is not plastic and no leaking of dangerous chemical into it.
I used to carry those plastic container to contain 2-3 slice of bread with marigine with sugars, or jam coated, later they put rice with veges into it.Later some in time, carying those bread with jam and cheese, or slices of meat , or sometime plain jam.It goes on for long time, until i reach college then i eat outside food.Or go back to hotel room for instant noodles some malt chocolate drinks and naps.

Carbs, starches, fats make you sleepy; so avoided that in the afternoon- in school did not know these facts but my mother did!! And at times chocolate or a small ice-cream cup was bought at the cafeteria. carrying that from home in this hot tropical climate would be disastrous.

Hi I think- though I myself am a vegetarian- eating meat does not add weight, unless you eat all the fat with it or combine with starchy foods like bread / rice, or th meat itself is cooked in a lot of oil or fat-rich sauce. Yes only vegetables also help maintaining weight provided again they are not accompanied or cooked in fats. And as you say fruits is your favourite, than that is very good to reach your goal.

Hi udayrao2, it's really interesting to learn that you have various type of delicious food in different stage of age. You are fortunate as well to have loved ones to prepare those yummy and nutritive foods in different varieties for you. I think you feel the love as well as warmth at the same time when entertain your hungry stomach with those tasty food in your lunch box. My parents were busy with their work to earn the daily expenses so the four siblings of us were given pocket money to spend in the primary school canteen for six years. We were really happy we could have the chance to take the delicious and nutritious foods served in the canteen. Unhealthy snacks were not allowed to sell in the canteen for the health of primary kids. I enjoyed the coconut milk rice with various type of dishes added to it. Curry noodle was my another favorite food those days. During secondary school days I prepare the lunch boxes for my three siblings as well as myself most of the time. Most of the time the food was sandwiches with different filling like eggs and different vegetables slices, or stirred fried sardine and onion, or cheese and butter, etc. All of them were delicious respectively. My mom would prepare fried rice with some delicious gradient as well a a fried egg as topping if she was free. She was good in preparing this recipe If I had time I would like to prepare the lunch box myself. If not I would get it from the college or office canteen after my marriage. My husband dislikes taking food from the lunch box and he enjoys to have food together with his colleagues in the office canteen. They really have fun to chat and to take food as well as drinks during their happy moment Happy posting

Well, for me, my high school school doesn't have a specific lunch period, but when I go to the gym, or go to the zoo or someplace out, I like to pack obento (japanese lunchbox). I usually fill with onigiri (rice balls), some meat, veggies, etc. I like bento especially since I can design them how I want, so they can be made into cute shapes and characters in the bento, it's fun!
