My Crazy Weekend with Sick Kids

Schools over and now the kids are sick. What's up with that??? So the last day of school was on Friday. Great news right? Wrong! My son woke up Friday night crying with a bad croup cough and was having trouble breathing. We called the doctor and they said to take him out in the cooler night air or put him in the bathroom with the shower turned on to make the room nice and steamy to help him breath. So after all that we put him back to bed and were awake every few hours going through the same thing with him. Saturday morning his nose was running like crazy and he still had the cough. I called the doctors and got an appointment for the first thing Monday morning. So Saturday during the day he seems not too bad with the cough, still a runny nose though. Saturday night comes and he wakes up at 12:30am coughing a little but it's tolerable. We calm him down and he goes back to sleep. At 3:00am my daughter comes to me saying she doesn't feel good. She rushes into the bathroom and gets sick. For the next four hours she is in and out of the bathroom throwing up. Sunday she's on the couch all day just sipping some water here and there. Thank goodness they both slept through the night Sunday night without any problems. Finally Monday morning comes and I take them both to the doctors. Doctor checks out my son and says he probably already went through the worst of the croup so he doesn't need any medicine. I told him about my daughter and he said she probably just had a 24 hour bug. So that was my weekend. Anyone else go through anything similar?

You poor thing. I can remember growing up and my brother was always sick every holiday, vacation, etc until he got his tonsils out. Luckily I haven't gone through this with my own kids. I think it is worse because the weather is warm making everyone miserable.

That's really tough when a child is sick for a holiday or vacation. I'm glad you haven't had to experience that with your children.

I know the time will go by so quickly. It just seems to stand still when the kids are sick.

My son started coughing the last day of school and he had lots of phlegm. The doctor said it is just drainage from his sinuses caused my his allergies. I hate that he was feeling bad, but I am glad that he didn't get really bad till after school was out.

In a way I am glad about that too. At least they could take it easy to recover at home and not worry about missed school days.

I think this is a case of stress due to change of routine made them more likely to catch whatever was going around. Hope they are now ready for a great Summer.

My husband was off for and entire week. My son ended up sick and had to have breathing treatments for the entire week! My husband got a cold and felt like crap so he couldn't really help! Now he is back and work and everyone is healthy....oh well. So much for a fun filled week!

I'm glad to hear your family is feeling better. It can be really difficult when the kids are sick and the parents at the same time.

Hi Shar, All the time, they seem to be sick at weekendsand school hiolidays never during school time, which is great for me in a way otherwise I would have to miss of work, just one of the joys, not, of parenting. I suffered terribly with croup when I was young and my nana used to mix me up butter sugar and honey and lemone into a cup and it really helped soothe the throat. Glad they are both well again now. Huggles. Ellie :D

I guess in a way that worked out well for you then. I never heard of the butter, sugar, honey and lemon recipe. I'll have to remember that for next time.

I remember those times! They seemed as if they would never end, both boys sick in bed one after another and the nights I sat up with them, desperate for rest. Now they both remember those times fondly, not because they were sick but because they knew I would take care of them, hug them and always make them feel better. You'll live through it, it's awful and you hate to see your children suffer but these times create precious bonds and memories.

Exactly. We sit up worrying about them all night and watching them. Just waiting for them to get better.

Nope, not a fun weekend or a good way to start the summer vacation. They are both feeling better now though, thank goodness.
