I'm planning to put up a website. Do websites really needed computer servers? I mean do I have to put a PC that runs almost 24 hours to maintain the site? The site have forums too. Please give me some ideas before I put up the site.

I don't think so sweetie. As i understand it a lot run webpages without a dedicated 24 hour server. Try it and see what happens, okay. TATA.

Providing your own dedicated server is very expensive. You must provide : 1. Dedicated Server 2. Enough Internet Bandwidth, so you must rent a dedicated Lease Line (this expensive) 3. Have an Admin The better solution is host your website to Hosting Provider. So you only rent hosting and rent domain name. When the visitors to you site increase, you can upgrade your bandwidth. Its cheaper.

Oh, having my own server is really expensive then. I'll just have to cut prices and rent hosting then. How does bandwidth affect websites anyway? I have no idea how it works,

Simply bandwidth is like a street, and website is like you have a Shop. Visitors visit your website (store) via this Street. When you have only a few visitors visit your Shop, it doesn't matter if the street is narrow. But when more and more visitors come to your Shop, we must widen the street. This happened to Website. Initially you can host your site to hosting provider (rent building) and rent minimal/ necessary internet bandwith(rent a street) to cut cost. When your site grow as visitors grow, you can upgrade the bandwith. Of course, more bandwith you rent, more costly. But if you want to cut cost (no cost), simply you can host through free webhosting. This hosting absolutely free of charge. But my advice, if your site is a commercial site, better you host to hosting provider. Its about trustworthines. notes : one of free hosting and domain you can visit this site "http: // co.cc" (please remove space) I hope this will help you. If you need more info you can PM me.

basqui, I don't really know all that much about websites. I think if it's a big website such as this that yes there must be a server, but if it's a personal site that you can use a free website provider for then no server is needed. Good Luck with figuring out all their is to about the site, and maybe we can talk about lining to each other one day!

Well, I'm planning for a small site or a forum for some topics from the Philippines. I think I'm gonna have hosting sites doing the server job. Keep in touch and see if we could link sites in the future.

just like the others have said, it will be very expensive for one to maintain a website if you want to have it on your own. but you can have a web host that will be less than the dedicated server you wish to have.

Yes you can do that. Or you can find someone that can host your site. There are free sites out there and there are also those that you need to pay. Its up to you. If you can afford the maintenance, electricity and etc costs then I suggest you set up your own server. Oh you need to buy also a domain name.

I mean, If I'll pay for domain name and hosting, do I need to setup a server or the hosting site does that already?

Oh, I was just in a web master's forum and I read how one user shared how his server is spending a lot of electricity every year and how he's spending much on the bills.

I don't know how AOL works, but I've had a couple of free sites once. But I want my site to run on my own domain and not on sub-domain so I'll be researching for more tips before buying domains and hosting.

hi basqui i don't think you would need a dedicated server for your site and forums.. a web hosting solution would do just fine. those kind of companies offer quite a number of value added services along with their standard web hosting packages. you'll save a lot of time and you'll be able to concentrate more on your websites instead of the back end details. when engaging a web hosting service, there will always be multiple options of service to choose from. so i'm sure that there will be a package out there for you from your profile i see that you're from the Philippines, so if you're going to use a ".ph" at the end of your web address, you would usually use a local host as some governments have some discounts/subsidies/incentives for locally owned domain names.. but if you're just going to be a ".com", you can use a hosting solution from anywhere in the world..the only limit is what will be affordable for you

Thank you, I don't know if I have to put .ph at my domain name. I'll compare prices from local hosting sites and the international ones so that I'll know which one to buy domains from.
