Wimbledon 2010 Villain

FIFA World Cup just had the notorious Nicolas Anelka as the villain of the tournament and Wimbledon is not short of drama as it has produced a villain in the form of Victor Hanescu from Romania. It seems he had actually spitted at the crowd in an angry confrontation with spectators during his third-round defeat against German Daniel Brands. Just what is wrong with these professionals who have worked so hard to appear in such a prestigious world event and simply throw it away at the spur of the moment. I am sorry but I am sure there are avenues which a player can go about dealing with unruly spectators. I am sure players would already be aware of it before the commencement of the tournament. So, what is happening here? Now, he is really going to bear the full brunt from the organizers where he is not only going to be ordered to pay a hefty a £6,000 fine as All England Club chiefs investigate him for unsportsmanlike conduct. He could face a lifetime ban from Wimbledon for his alleged misconduct, as well. Wimbledon has had it's fair share of players throwing tantrums right from John McEnroe till Goran Ivanisevic. But spitting on spectators is completely unacceptable. If the player has done that, then I think the ATP should ban the player for some time as a punishment as such issues need to be dealt with an iron hand. Cheers! Ram

ram_cv, Players like the former John McEnroe and company if you recall are venting on their game and themselves. However, they have never taken it on the public crowd, don't get me wrong I am not supporting these unsportsmanlike public outbursts. I feel that every professional sports persons should know how to behave both in and out of court. They may have their off days and frustrations during their game but still the last thing they should do is take it out on the crowd who might be their potential fans. Anyway, Wimbledon being independent does have their own code and does not ATP to intervene, as in this case where the errant player was fined £10,000 only - escaping a life ban from the tournament.

Hmm... I agree with you that spitting on the public is clearly taking it too far. I think he has been let off lightly if only a 10000 pound fine has been imposed on him!! Cheers! Ram

I think what happens is that the personal side of some athletes is outweighing the professional side. not everyone has the ability to control their urges and they end up harming theirselves or even your team. Some people can't give with pressure.

cleverson99, Whatever said he should never have taken it out on the crowd as athletes should be role models. I hope that he will cherish this chance to play in this tournament again. I've just seen it on the news and in my opinion the guy is scum. vile scum. Spitting at somebody is just totally unacceptable. I hope he does get a life ban from Wimbledon, is a unique event with a great atmosphere is doesn't need scumbags like him dragging it into the gutter.

thekelz, My exact sentiments and even if the crowd had been unruly and unsportsmanlike - athletes like him should be aware that Wimbledon are also strict with disrespectful spectators and will not hesitate to take the necessary legal actions. All he had to do was to seek out the umpire and stewards of the courts to assist and deal with these unruly elements instead of taking it out on them personally. Anyway, it seems like the organizers are letting him off with a £10,000 fine.
