Wearing uniforms

Some high schools require students to wear uniforms. Others allow students to wear clothing of their own choic. Which situation do you think is better and why? I think it is a good idea for high school students to wear uniforms. Firstly, high school students should not pay too much attention on their appearance. Young people should develop the confidence that whatever they wear, they look beautiful. They should pay more attention to study knowledge. Secondly, if students are allowed to wear whatever they want, poor teenagers may feel upsetting in front of rich ones. This is not good for their growth. So in my opinion, high school students should wear uniforms.

well, in our university here in the philippines, we don't have uniforms but we still have dress codes. Slippers, short skirts, sando are not allowed to be worn inside the campus. In my opinion, there are pros and cons in wearing uniforms. WITHOUT UNIFORMS PROS: - we can go to school whatever clothes we have. - we can be as comfortable as we can CONS: - spending time to think what to wear - unconsciously buying more clothes as not to "repeat" the clothes that were worn the previous days

Pro: the clothes you buy can be worn outside of school as well. Uniforms will be for school only and once you graduate will be of now use to you at all. No thinking and no decisions! The school will do that for you. The kid that doesn't know how to dress...he/she can learn that later or get a job that requires uniforms like McDonalds.

I'm actually very against uniforms for schools. Why? Kids need to learn to dress properly and they will learn that thru trial and error. In school they should be dressed neatly and they should be clean. A limited dress code should be adhered to. And why do we need to all dress the same in case some kids are poor? Some people are poor...it's a fact. We should be teaching our kids to accept each others differences . High school is a time for preparing them for the real world. In the real world people dress differently. We are supposed to teaching them to make wise decisions for themselves and here we are deciding for them what they need to wear. We try to teach them not to follow the crowd and to be an individual and then we tell them that they all have to look alike. And just one last note....I know many poor kids and they need not stand out. One can dress cool and be clean very cheap.

England has a long history of wearing school uniforms at high school and it works wonderfully well. The uniform is worn in years 7 - 11 ( when they are gaining an education not how to dress) after that they wear their own clothes. In my son's school the only stipulation on the student's clothes in years 12 and 13 is that the boys wear a shirt and tie and that the girls dress 'respectfully'. Self expression and individuality are not only demonstrated in the clothes on peoples backs( although the children still have their own free time to show that), wearing a uniform does not take away any individuality - when a group of my son'd friends come around after school I see a complete mixed bag of boys - even though they all wear the same uniform. All I know from being a pupil at school, a mother of children at school and a grandmother of children at school - in a society where school uniforms have always been worn, is that you look at the uniforms of different schools and I can tell you with 100% conviction that the schools who are stricter with their uniform regime have better behaved pupils, a higher standard of discipline and get far better academic results - this can be no coincidence!!

But high school is more about educating not 'preparing for the real world'. a And in the 'real world' anyway there are many people who have to wear a uniform - probably 75% of the population if you think of it - apart from uniforms like nurse, police etc, many offices have their own 'uniform, shops do, banks do !!

Hi sid5566, your opinion is great! I agree that "High school is a time for preparing them for the real world. In the real world people dress differently"

I agree to uniforms because there is no more having others putting a person down for what they have on. Not all parents can afford to send their kids to school in designer clothes. That way one kid wouldn't be labeled rich or poor. All the kids would be equal. Another one, going to school is to get a good education not a fashion show. I see it every day during the school year when I take my oldest to the bus stop or drop her off at school. The girls has on these tight jeans, makeup all over their faces. The boys are wearing clothes that are 10 times to big for them. Would be nice to see the boys and girls looking like young ladies and nice looking gentlemen.

Or we could teach the kids kindness and acceptance and manners and respect for the individuals that we are trying to raise our kids to be rather than following the crowd. Now would be the time to do it. In a couple of years they will be out on their own and not everyone wears uniforms in the real world so there ya have it. Those baggy pants and designer clothes and tight jeans will be everywhere that isn't school.

My kids do have manners and respect others. Thank goodness that they don't follow the crowd when it comes to certain things. Kids don't have to wear uniforms to look like ladies or gentlemen. There are very decent clothes out there even with designer labels on them. I agree not all jobs require a uniform, but they do require a dress code. I agree baggy pants, tight jeans, not including designer clothes are everywhere that isn't school. I think that is where it should be.

I am against the use of school uniforms; they only serve to make people collaborate as one easily controlled conformist group. They are brainwashing people into following authority, not stepping out of line ever; and they are trying to make everyone the same, so they are easily controlled.

I appreciate your opinion though I cannot quite agree with you. Wearing same cloth is not equal to behave the same. You are free to think and speak.

Hey mapi1234581825! When I was a child i weared uniforms.I didn't like them because it was reducing my freedom and making everyone look the same. They reduced the freedom pupils have and thus made them less creative and less thoughtful. This would not benefit them in life because they need to be creative and smart. They would be less interesting to other people and it will be hard for them to communicate. Those are all disadvantages for me which make the uniforms a bad idea. Happy mylotting

Thank you for your replay. You say wearing uniforms making everyone look the same. I donnot agree. Mental retarded person look the same though they are wearing different kinds of cloth. when you look at somebody and talk with him, you will have a rough idea about what kind of person he is, kind or selfish, brave or coward, generous or mean, energetic or tired. You got these important information from his spirits not his cloth. There are much wider fields belonging to high school students besides cloth. Wearing uniforms reduce your freedom of choosing cloths not your freedom of thingking and speaking. Also, they can show their creativity and tastes in dress at weekends.

Well i say YES to uniform because it takes away the colors from gangs and then again it allows everyone to be equal (i think). well any ways the uniforms is alot cheaper and make you have more money in your pocket. Also its much easier to shop because you don't really need to choose a specific outfit to wear or don't need anything to match your clothing to school... So on my opinion is Yes and even though i wearied a uniform in my high school year (not private school) it was worth it because i bought stuff with the rest of the money i have saved.. :D

Only in the confines of the High school and then there is the real world which we are supposed to be preparing them for. All this is doing is masking the problem. How about teaching them how to dress proper for different situations.

I think school uniforms are more for power. Adults wanting to make sure they have power over kids. I was poor growing up and I looked good. I never gave to much thought to how much money the girl parents had sitting next to me in math class. Why would I care? It's not about money. You have to pay for uniforms. If the schools around here decide my kids have to have them. I'm not paying for it. The school will give them the uniforms and I will burn them in the street.

In the UK all our high school children wear school uniform and I think that it is a good thing. For one thing is reduces peer pressure where children look down on others who don't have the designer labels etc and stops the bullying that can arise froom that. A school uniform aids safety as it is far easier for the school authorities to recognize the children belonging to their school, outsiders are spotted instantly. When children wear school uniform there are no battles about not wearing inappropriate clothes in school. The wearing of a school uniform also helps with discipline. My son goes to an excellent high school and the pupils always look very smart. On top of the uniform these other rules are put in place for the pupils appearance Hooded tops and sweatshirts must not be worn in place of a coat. We do not allow number one hair cuts, extreme hair colours or coloured hair wraps. No jewellery apart from a wrist watch is allowed for either boys or girls. Plasters over earrings are not acceptable. Pupils wishing to have their ears pierced should do so at the beginning of the summer holiday period to allow piercings to heal. We expect all pupils to wear the uniform properly; for example we do not allow pupils to wear their shirts/blouses outside their trousers/skirts. Shirts and blouses must have proper collar which has been designed to be worn with a tie and the top button must be fastened. Breaches of school uniform will result in sanctions. Pupils arriving in school not dressed correctly will be sent home to change.

I agree. I think it is better for high school students to wear uniforms. Some schools are way to lenient in what they let students get away with wearing to school! I wore a uniform in high school and didn't really mind. It was so much easier to put on the uniform and not have to worry about what to wear to school each day. It was also much less expensive that way. We didn't have to worry about buying new clothes and shoes all the time. The students who wear uniforms don't have to compete with each other over clothing, which is a good thing also. When everyone wears the same thing there is no teasing others about what they wear either. I think it's good all around to wear uniforms. I don't really see a down side to it. Not wearing them has a lot of disadvantages.

I agree with all the people who say a school should have the concept of wearing uniforms. First and fore most the children look so smart in their uniforms. Nothing can beat the smartness the uniforms gives one. And its easy for busy moms like me to dress the kids with uniforms, otherwise everyday I will have to search for a dress and it is time consuming. I will have to buy more color dresses, budget apart, its more time consuming to choose dresses and visiting the shops every now and then. children grow up very quickly so we can't buy dresses for a whole year. So only uniforms till the kids get into colleges. Here in India we do have schools who do not prefer uniforms, one of such schools are the KFI schools ---Krishnamoorthy foundation Schools, which is famous all over the world.

In my opinion , I think wearing uniform is a better choice because it makes them feel that they're in a same community and also, let others know which school you're from or things like that . Like what you said, if they are allowed to wear their own clothes , they'll be paying a lot of attention to what they want to wear tomorrow , where to buy new clothes and stuffs like that . Therefore, I would prefer students to wear uniform .

Uniforms in schools. A good thing in my opinion. It's a good idea because it doesn't make social differences between students.School is an important institution of our life, and it should be treated this way. However clothing express how we feel and act,it expresses the way we are as human beings, and in someway it might suppress that. Anyway students wearing uniforms in high school has my vote!!
