I would like to share an event that happened to me last night. It was a first time event for me. Please read my story of the event at the below link and then post back here and let me know what you think. Also post if you have seen or know why a spider goes both directions while making a web....or at least the one I was watching.
Thanks,
Bryan

I left a comment on your linked article. It really is quite good! Fascinating even!
I think it was so cool of you to have the patience to watch the whole process! I've never had the pleasure, but must make time someday to do so.
As I mentioned in my other comment, the behavior of the spider may simply be a result of evolutionary adaptation. The method of changing directions and other specifics of web building that may not seem sensible may simply be a result of evolutionary success. In other words, this method of web building worked, and there has been no evolutionary or natural selection pressure to change something that works. Nature tends to adhere to "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." At least, that's the only thing I can offer at this point, not being an expert on spiders and all.

This is very true and I beleive that nature knows best. I also beleive that all species of spiders have their certain way that they just know how to build a web. It has to be in their DNA. As it is not like a mother spider teachers her children how to spin a web. Kind of like chickens that are hatched under a light instead of a hen and have never seen an adult chicken to "pass on information" somehow knows that they need to scratch the ground to find grit and they also know to sit on their eggs "which no adult chicken could have ever told them to do". Ahhh good old nature.
