How do you overcome embarrassment?

Embarrassment is an emotional state experienced upon having a socially or professionally unacceptable act or condition witnessed by or revealed to others. It is most definitely most embarrassing if it was witnessed by a lot of people. So how do you deal with it? How do you overcome embarrassment? Some will just cover their face, run and never show up again. Others will even take a bow and savor the moment. Me, I'm probably so red in the face but I will just laugh about it.

Well, it depends on the situation. Just like you, I'll probably be red in the face as well because I get blush so easily. Bottomline, whatever the embarrassing situation may be, it is better that we leave it in the past because there is nothing else we can do about it. No use crying over spilled milk, so they say. Better that we learn the lesson so that it will not happen again in the future.

I have had my share of embarrassing moments over the years. I have found the best way to deal with any embarrassing situation is through laughter. If you laugh and others laugh, it doesn't seem so bad anymore. Soon the moment has passed and you only have the memory of it happening at all.

Hi, Maricris.:-) That depends on the situation. If it is not humiliating and nothing so personal, I just laugh at myself for doing a silly thing. But if it is a bad case as in you were scolded by a superior, that is just so hard to deal with. I will probably pack up my thing and walk out the door and never return especially if it is not my fault. In any situation, I'll turn as red as hell, though.LOL

Just this last Wednesday morning, I had the most embarrassing moment of my life when I missed one step in overpass and fell down. How do I overcome this? I just stood up acting like there is nothing happen and the people stopped starring at me.

I will pretend nothing happened and look around then shift the topic. ha~~~ or just say that "oh.. who is talking right now? I heard a voice just the same as mine... hello? who is imitating me??" haha~~ just find a rather easy&humour way to deal with the embarrassment :)

It helps to just reject the whole concept of "social norms" I am not easily embarrassed because if there is something called socially acceptable.. I don't want any part of it anyway. I think we become less concerned with what people think about us as we get older and more secure in our own self worth. Or maybe we just realize that we are not that important and our little faux pas are not really that interesting to anyone else. It reminds me of something a friend said to me once, I do not know if he was quoting another source.. he said, "When I was 20 I worried about what everyone thought about me, when I was 40 I didn't care what anyone thought about me.. and when I was 60, I realized that no one was thinking about me"

As a therapist I have helped many people who suffer from bein overly embarrassed at many what you may call "normal" situations. First of all, it needs to be realized that when a person suffers from too much embarrassment, it will not hurt him/her and if it is not dealt with there and then, it will happen time and time again for lesser situations. When we are emabarrassed, we need to stay with it and whenever possible share it with those around us. As we share, so we can transcend it and become master of it, so it no longer rules our life. _Derek

I would just laugh at myself. I think it would be more embarrassing if I cry or run away. Also, I do not think I would like it if I see looks of pity directed towards me, thus, by laughing, people would be encouraged to laugh at what happened too. We could laugh together.

I will apologize and say, "I'm sorry, I just a human being who commit mistakes". Then I will leave the place to prevent more embarrassments. You know, some embarrassments when not dealt with properly begets more embarrassments.

I have experienced embarrassment in front of many people a lot of time. Whenever it happened to me, my face will turn red. Sometimes I will just continue what I was doing as if nothing really happened and a lot of times, I will just laugh at myself but will not look at the people because I wouln't like to see their reactions.

Hi santosmarichris! I do the same... Whenever I do/act something stupid with many people around, I just laugh out loud with myself! Yes, I feel ashame but after doing it, what can I do? I cannot turn back time to make it right so I just accept that it happened, and it's done. i don't get embarrassed with stupid things I do. What embarrasses me most is when other people don't treat me nice when I don't do anything bad to them. I feel like I really, really wanna hit them on their face! hahah! But, of course, I won't do that (unless they hurt me). Ssshh... I'm just cursing them under my nose! Hahaha!!! Just kidding! Nope, I just pray for them. And hope that when they wake up in the next morning, they no longer hate, or dislike me.. :)
