I have 2 pure bred English staffies...I have had our boy since he was weeks old but our girl ws given to us just over 2 years ago at the age of 3.5 years. My hubby was playing with our dogs on the loungeroom floor a couple of weeks ago & showed me that Josie can shake hands when asked...I was VERY surprised as I didn't know she could do this!! Josie is funny & gets really excited when you ask her to shake hands - it's very cute.

Good for her! God knows how many triks she knows from her previous owner! You can surprise your husband by teaching your other staffie to shake hands too. It isn't very difficult. Take a biscuit in your hand and keep it pinned between your palm and your thumb. Stay in front of your dog, make him sit, and offer him your hand. On the very first attempts, he will sniff your hand, trying to get the biscuit. Don't let him have it until he touch your hand with his paw. Don't panic, he eventually will do this. When he touch your hand with his paw, reward him with a biscuit from your other hand. Repeat this until he put his paw on your hand the very moment you offer your hand. Then show your husband what a smart dog you two have!

Wow! Your dog is rather very trained then and you must be very good dog trainor. I have just bought a Great Den Amercian and i named it Ruffet. I was thinking of how can I train Ruffet like your's dog. Am trying my best to train Ruffet and wish he will grow soon.

I wish I had trained her for that but one of her previous owners will have to take credit for that as I never taught her that...It will take time & practise to train your pup...try for 5-10 mins every day...Good luck.

That's so cute that Josie can shake hands - you should post a pic for us! Staffies are known to be intelligent dogs, and very protective and loyal to their owners; they just want to please us so much, and get very excited when we praise them! Now you will have to teach the boy to do some tricks!

I do have a photo of the dogs in my photos on my profile..I never thought of adding one here...I may have to start teaching Boof a few tricks...will have to wait a few weeks though as Josie is on heat so he's not interested in anything else but Josie lol.

There are a few things people should do when getting an older dog, you might have done these already. Just sit in front of your pet and don't do anything for a few moments, just for their reaction. Then a few basic commands. The pet may do them at first, then maybe not until it becomes relaxed and feels safe. Sit, down, paw( first one side, then the other) come, speak, place a leash with choke chain on the pet(go for a small walk) pet on the left side, heel, sit, down come. Then after a few weeks try a few more..

We did most of that but yeah, I never checked for tricks like shaking hands...I was just making sure she was fine in her new house & that she got along with our male.

Hi moonchild1au, yes dogs do shake hands. How we train, it will do the same. Playing with the ball, shake hands, running, roll sus etc., I feel happy to see dogs doing all these.
