Why do raining slows down internet connection?

I just noticed that whenever it rains, the internet connection really slows down esp G broadband. What is the rationale behind?

hushi22, Besides the reasons, I think we should not be using the computer when it is raining very heavily and especially when one does not have a proper protections against current surge from lightning. Take care.

however, most of the time that is inevitable. there are really times that i need to use computer for some important stuff. don't u think so? =)

hushi22, It will depend besides a storm will come to pass and a computer is quite an expensive investment. I feel that the risk is just too expensive and that it would be prudent to rest a while sometimes.

I had a bad experience of a lightning strike, which caused a surge in the telephone line. On that day lightning struck consecutively, and each tine it was getting closer to where I lived. I was going to switch off the modem when it happened. I lost the modem, router, and motherboard. Since a replacement motherboard was no longer available, I had to purchase one with a new CPU, power supply, and RAM. On top of that I lost the trust of my clients because I failed to meet the dateline. They did not believe that my computer sufferred a current surge. It took me about one month to get online again. The moral of the storu is to take all necessaty precautions.

Rains slow down the Internet connection, especially for wireless communications because the rain interferes with the signal of the wireless connection. Think of it this way, if you are on a huge field and another person is on the other side, if you shout, the other person will hear you but not as loud as you said it. The sound of your voice weakens over distance. When it rains, the other person might not even hear you because of the sound of the rain. Similar to wireless connections, these signals degrade over distance. When it rains, the signals traveling through space degrades even more. it's because there is no clear path for the signal to pass through. I hope you understood what I said and that I was able to answered your question well :)

Well it is so, because raining simply restricts the electromagnetic waves to pass through the atmosphere, and so the radiations got pretty much affected. So it results in the slow down of internet connection.

Heavy rains definitely affects wireless internet broadband, like a degraded radio signal reception on televisions when raining. With some basic knowledge on physics, radio signals, even it can pass through walls, still absorbed and weaken with distance and large blockage of matter like mountains, tall buildings, and heavy rains. but i dont think it affects cable internet connection unless a typhoon fell a street posts and cut the internet.

some internet connections are wireless therefore if the rain pours, some signals will be bounced off by the water somehow blocking the data... just like in cellular phones, the signals go haywire when it rains

Raining Slows down the internet just because water droplets creates an interference on wireless CPE to network nodes(applies to wireless data transmission eg. 3G/wimax) and on ground to satellite communications. however it is not 100% applicable if you are near to the gateway of your ISP and using a wired connection.
