I am thinking of starting my own business. I have been toying around with the idea for a while now and came up with making my own beauty products from home. it's relatively inexpensive. I just don't know if there is a market for it in my town. I wish I could find a place to generate surveys for me to send out to random people asking if they would be interested in this type of thing.

Really all you can do is try. It does not even need to be just in your town though. You could list your stuff for sale on eBay, etsy, and ecrater as well. Since it is relatively inexpensive for you to make these items it would not hurt to just give it a whirl. Goodluck!

That's an excellent idea angelface. I think there is always a market for beauty products. Being inexpensive doesn't have to be less superior. It's just an addition to the word variety. In fact it's a pull factor. Surveys would be good to find out if there is, nevertheless. You never know till you try. And just keep focused. Good luck!

I too have toyed with the idea of creating and selling my own products like lip balms and soaps. As with all business there are lots of things you have to consider. First of all, what will be the selling point of your products? My products were going to be all vegan. As a vegan myself, I find it difficult to find cheap decent vegan products with ease so I thought there was a market for this. Have you experimented with recipes yet? Can you create a good product? Do you have the skills needed or access to someone who can help with attractive packaging and labelling? If you are making and distributing beauty products it is important to know what the health and safety laws are in your area. You must register your products with the full ingredient list and have it approved. Depending on the size of your business you may also want to consider insurance. Do you plan to sell online, through word of mouth or at the local markets? You mentioned you would like to create a survey to find out who would buy your products. You can do this by asking people you know, if you have kids ask the mums at school, ask your friends, get your friends to ask their friends and family. If you decide to go ahead with the business start small, give out free samples, distribute leaflets, talk to businesses such as salons and small clothes stores and ask if they will stock some of your products. Mention your products/shop in beauty forums- put yourself out there! If your products are good people will keep coming back. They have have something to offer that other products don't whether it be better quality, better price, cuter packaging or nicer scents. Good luck with it and let us know when you have it up and running!

Are you a chemist?what kind of beauty products?soap, shampoos, lotions, hair treatments, facial waxes etc, if that is what you like .if you are not a chemist get a licensed chemist, beauty products are mixtures of various chemicals..and think of your Products uniqueness, why will your product excell more others, what is your packaging, what are your market level...start small but think big, start with friends around you, and be prepared to be criticized..good luck!

A questionnaire would be fairly inexpensive to do, but the problem isn't quite so much getting them out, but getting them back in! Alternatively, if you have the confidence, just start chatting to people in the shopping centres. Give out flyers with your information on to anyone interested. It may help if you have an attractive website for your company, especially if you want to expand to online shopping etc. Though, this can be a little complicated at first. A website can help you sell your products to other towns etc, if you don't have a big enough customer base in your town. Word of mouth is also a good way to get the word out on your products, but you would have to have a large network to get a decent customer base. If your town has markets or fairs, try to get a stall. The bigger profile the better, as you'll have more people to tell about your company. It's been mentioned, but don't forget about licensing etc! Good luck!

you could do something like that on your own. just make up a questionaire and drop it at houses/businesses etc. also, what i would do is check out your local library and see if you can get any books on starting your own business.

I think that is a great idea. I know you said that you want to make the products from home but are you going to sell them online like with Ebay or try to sell them in stores? I think there are plenty of people willing to buy beauty products.

I have my own small business from home and I went to few stores with my products, asked them to give me a little bit of space to have them on their shelves. I asked them to pay me only when they sell my product - they keep part of the profit. Just started few months ago, takes time, but it works. I need to go out and find more stores. I also have a site - you can check it in my profile. Hope it works for you.

angelface23 you could sell your products at an open market a flea market or other events such as festvials. If you got a good product most of the time it will sell with the right marketing.

That is good idea of starting yourself business. You need a lot of survey for selling your products well before starting. In fact I always wanna have my own business even small business because you can control your free time. But it is hard to find suit products and good client. What do you think about it?

I think if you made some free samples to give out to your friends and neighbours youcould ask them for their feedback, then make some to sell in a local market with your own label

Well, why do you need something complicated? You can create a simple survey on your own computer for this purpose. It does not need to be very long or fancy, it is the results that matter for you! So just make it yourself, print it from your own computer and walk around and hand the surveys out in crowded areas. I am sure some people would not mind filling it in!

Hmm.. If you live in a village/subdivision, you can print out a survey with just the question if they are interested in it and hand it out to the guardhouse and ask if they would kindly hand it over to each house owner there and make 'em answer it. You can go to a convenience store and hand out some or if you don't want to stand there all day you can give the papers to the cashier and kindly ask if they could give it to each person that makes a purchase and make 'em answer it. :D You can also tell your friends about it and make them spread it through word.. :D
