Some Youtube videos are promotion for people to sign - up

If you notice some of youtube videos, they are base on promotion on certain products. They want people to sign up, and they will give you promo code on certain websites to give you such and such benefits. Do you think that is a smart marketing strategy? If you are one of the consumers, would you consider sign up for it base on the promotion video?
