Is safe for a dog to eat tomatoes?

Binne, the tomatoes eater - She has her ears glued (again!)

Yesterday afternoon, when I came home from the vegetable market, Binne jumped on me and tear off the bag that I carried. The vegetables spread all over the floor. I picked them up, but it seems that Binne was faster than me. After a minute or so I saw her eating a big tomato and she seemed to enjoy it. I know some fruits and vegetables are good for a dog diet. What about tomatoes?

When my dog was a pup i was surprised to see that he would eat chikoos (sapodila)which fell from the tree.I think when you own a pup you'll be surprised to see what they can eat.Its the younger kids in the family who introduce our pets to all sorts of food in our absence. For instance my younger son gives all junk food to my dog and it enjoys the food.

You are right, picjim. Puppies eat almost everything. At least my puppy Binne does that. Probably that's the way they get to know the surrounding world.

Poor little dog. Don't blame yourself for what happened. Many dog owners leave toy-ropes when puppies are left alone and nothing bad happened. I think it was an accident. My other dog had the same bad habit of eating inedible things. One month after she came to my home she vomited pieces of yellow linoleum (1-1.5 inches long). And we didn't have linoleum anywhere in the house. I thought she ate it when she was with her brothers, at the breeder.

Lol i know the feeling, ive owned several dogs now, i used to have a German Shepard and a staff both at the time were aged 2 and under and unfortunately i did have linoleum in my kitchen, well i lived in a privately rented house and the dogs destroyed the lino while i was at work oneday, i replaced the lino for exactly the same at 300 pound sterling 4m by 4m, well this wasn't the last time they did it, i think 6 replacements later i finally moved out of the house, the dogs just had a thing for lino, they wouldn't touch it for a month or two and then one day out the blue it would be in tiny littlepieces all over the kitchen and 2 grand later i really couldn't do it again. I also used to have a english springer spaniel who ate anything including tin cans and glass i was forever getting cut chasing him around and pulling them out of his mouth. I now have a japanese akita she just steals my childrens food and digs constantly in my back garden.

TOmatoes are not good for dogs to eat, specially the plants/leaves themselves. However if the dog eats one - ripe - tomato it should not create a problem, just make sure that he isn't eating the whole thing every day:)

Actually most dogs do keep away from the leaves, but not all, my little one is crazy, loves to pull them and play with them. I had to move the tomatoes to another place because of her:)By the way the same thing with potato spuds, not good for doggies

Binne didn't ate tomato leaves, yet I have to be very carefull with her when we will go to visit my parents. They have a nice vegetables garden, I think I have to keep Binne away from it. LOL

Hello! I think tomatoes cannot harm your dog's health! It's a vegetable so it cannot be anything bad. My dog eats tomatoes, she eats almost everything. Good luck!

Thanks missweety! Binne also eats almost everything but she is 6 months old. What age is your dog? Is she a puppy? I'm asking you because I hope Binne will outgrow the bad habit of eating inedible things.

My aunt has a dog who loves to eat watermelon. I thought it would be bad for her digestion because of the fluids in the fruit but she is very healthy and continues to enjoy watermelons. I think any fruit or vegetables is good for dogs, it's just a matter of whether they like eating it. I think the only poisonous food that people can eat but dogs can't is chocolate.

You made me curious with the watermelon. It's season has just begun, and Binne will surely want to taste them.

Thanks for the link, sumanadep. I do know about carrots, peppers, celery and broccoli that they are good for a dog's diet. I used to give my other dog carrots and peppers. I also give Binne carrots. She likes them and she chews them like a rabbit :))

I am relaxed now. :) I called the breeder to ask her about airedales and tomatoes. She laughed, because Binne's grandmother likes tomatoes and steals tomatoes, too. She said this grandma thief also steals carrots and potatoes and eats them. Tomorrow morning we are going to visit the vet, to find out his oppinion, too.

Any vegatable that a dog or pet eat on their own is safe. Animals tend to eat veggies when their stomach is upset or to balance their stomach or things they really like. My Bouviers take tomatoes off the vine while they are growing, picking only the ripe one, they can tell by the smell. Onions and a few others are not to good for them, ask your vet, or read a book on your breed. Some breeds get rashes and other things..

It seems the tomato didn't do any harm to Binne. It has been almost 24 hours since she ate the tomato and she's OK.

I am not a specialist at dogs but I don't think there is something wrong with the fact that your god ate tomatoes. It is more interesting for me the self fact that the dog ate it because they usually rely on the smell so that they like something and eat it.Tomatoes I think are not the best choice your dog did :)))

Binne is only a puppy and she tries and tastes everything, no matter it is food or anything else. I usualy don't let her eat things, unless I know they are good for a dog. But this time she stole the tomato, and when I saw her it was late.

I think there is nothing wrong with tomatoes, but if you ask a pet doctor you can be sure they will advice you to feed only with special dog food... royal canin... etc :D

He he! Chankov, I don't have a plan to but Binne on tomatoes diet. She stole the tomatoe, and I want to know if it is good to let her eat tomatoes from time to time, as she seemed to like the one she ate.

I'm not sure if it could be bad for your dog, all I know is if the dog eats a chocolate it will be hurt and poisoned. Just read this link to know more research on the internet and you will know why.

I knew about chocholate. Fortunately, I don't like chocholate, so there is no temptation for Binne :))

Thank you sasyke96 for sharing your experience. Binne feels good so far, but I won't give her another tomato until I ask our vet. Glad to find out there are other dogs that also like tomatoes. :)

hi i'm a trained animal technician so i know a fair bit about animals in general, no eating tomatoes will not hurt our dog unless he/she is allergic this would be apparent if your dog starts gagging or being sick not long after. Your lucky your dog eats stuff like that most ddogs turn there nose away, fruit and veg are just as good for most animals as it is for us, so if your dog likes it let them have it.

Thank you, chrisdarryn. Fortunately, it seems Binne is not allergic to tomatoes. She feels good so far. I know I'm lucky that she eats almost everything (and I'm talking only about food, here). I had a dog wich was a fussy eater, and I know how it is when a dog turns her nose away from food.
