Is Democracy Dying a Slow Death from Abuse of Power?

Albert Einstein once said, "A foolish faith in authority is the worst enemy of truth!" A most widely read book of all time, "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," sets forth these Five Basic Reasons why that civilization withered and died. * The undermining of the dignity and sanctity of the home, which is the basis for human society. * Higher and Higher Taxes; the spending of public money for free bread and circuses for the populace. *The mad craze for pleasure; sports, every year more brutal, more costly. *The building of great Armaments when the real enemy was within - the decay of individual responsibility, and the dearth of responsible leadership. *The decay of religion; faith fading into meer form, losing touch with life, losing power to guide people. Do you feel that our Democracy is slowly dying? Do we have any Great Leaders? Why are the CEO's of our biggest and most prosperous companies stealing from the stockholders?

hi barehugs You bring up some pertinent points. I do not know if I can elaborate more fully except I often wonder why we pick men who are extremely wealthy and have never known the plight of the ordinary men of the street to be our political leaders instead of men from the ordninary people, working men for example so they really know more about what our country really needs. I dont mean we should vote in illerate people not at all ,just people who have a little more in common with us ordinary people who work for a living. We need more honest men in politics and as the heads of large companies too.I do agree with all the points you brought up too.

Hi Hatley, These are great points and I feel the same way.I guess money is needed for a campaign and someone without it wouldn't catch the attention of the media and lets face the media has the power. Blessings.

Hi barehugs, I think that most civilizations crumble from within and it's likely what will happen today unless we begin to see some changes soon. Greed is the problem and the old saying, "the more you get the more you want" seems to be holding true. Great leaders are hard to find because first and foremost they have to be honest, and that's a quality that appears to be lacking in many. As Hatley said we continue to elect the rich rather than those who know about the "real world". Blessings.

I donot expect too much from society. It is not perfectly rational. It is developing with bad quality.People's intelligence is limited. They make mistaken choices to harm others and then themselvs eventually.I wouldnot be surprised if the third world war occur again, war is a punishment on mankind's bad intelligence. What I can do is just try to keep myself righteous and avoid foolish following to decayed culture.

Well it will happen democracy will slowly die but we must find something better, Socrates used to say that the authority should be on the hands of those that have golden blood, the best of the best.He ment those that do not care only for themselves but the community and have the intellect to help
