In a time that the “People” are demanding fiscal restraint, somebody is trying. Governor David Paterson, of New York, has promised to veto 6,900 bills for the budget. He says it spends billions of dollars the state does not have. People are asking him if he is waiting to negotiate, he says that no it just takes time to sign all of those vetos.
Governor Paterson had to threaten to shut down New York government in order to get a budget from his legislature. They did not want to present it because they knew of his upcoming vetoes.
Paterson wants the state to create a $1 billion contingency fund in the chance that the FMAP Medicaid funding does not come through from the federal government.
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver thinks there is a good chance the funding will come through and that they can deal with it at that time.

I do not live in New York, but I believe this could affect states all over. I would love to have this man for a Governor, we are coming down from the Ritter high here in Colorado.
How would you feel about having Paterson as a governor, or how do you feel for my friends in New York?
Is there more to this story that I am missing?

As I said yesterday, Paterson is an idiot!!
I live in New York, and wish I didn't. We have a really high cost of living, and really low wages, and we have some of the highest tax rates in the country. But that's not the point...
The point is stated very clearly in this article:
"He said many of the programs are laudable and important, but unaffordable. His vetoes Thursday included grants to the elementary school his children attended, a service group whose board of directors includes his wife, and a group to which his mother had been a member."
I remember something on the news awhile ago, not sure if it was directly connected with this or not.. I believe it was a vote as to how many people were going to be laid off.. I guess it was state jobs. The democrats of course all voted for it, but the republicans kept saying there were other, better options that included fewer lay offs, but the democrats weren't accepting that option, it was either lay off nearly 200 people or do nothing.
Also more recently there's been some news about forcing state workers to work a 4 day week, which would cut their wages obviously. Nobody is very happy about this either (though personally I think keeping your job at less wages is better than being unemployed).

Not if he's taking necessary money away from important programs like schools, hospitals, and state employees (not the politicians themselves though.. heaven forbid).
Years ago I worked for a family owned delivery service. The government funded hospital was one of our biggest clients. We would run blood samples and other type things to and from all sorts of local doctor offices and labs.. and we've even have to go to other city's hospitals in the state.. which was really good money for our company and the drivers making these deliveries. Unfortunately we could never count on the hospital to actually pay their bill due to the darn budget. They'd pay the year in full every April (ish) when the budget went through.. and if the budget was delayed, so was our payment, which meant hardships for our owner, and some of us even had to forgo paychecks occasionally until the hospital's bill was caught up.. then the owner could catch up on all the company's other bills (which was mostly payroll).
This is how the economy works... one business suffers and it trickles down into other businesses. Vetoing everything is going to make a lot of businesses suffer!
