Why do you think we dream?

There are loads theories on why we dream ranging from subconscious desires made real to the brain sorting through memories, but no one really knows exactly why we dream. So what's your theory? Why do we dream? How does our brain create dreams? Does dreaming serve a real purpose? Personally I don't believe that dreams have symbolic meaning or tell the future. I think dreaming is a combination of things that happen in the brain while we sleep. One, the brain is creating possible scenarios that may or may not happen in everyday life. Two, the brain is sorting through all memories both cherish and long forgotten. Three, the brain is just plain being creative which is why I have dreams that make no logical sense like me turning into a mermaid and flying through the sky. What do you think?

I think our dreams show us what may happen and warn us. They are just like a mirror which reflects our problems, worries, hopes and wishes. I do not believe that dreams have special meanings which you can find in books, for instance that if you dream of a cat, something of a kind will happen. For one person a cat may have a positive association and mean something different than for a person who dislikes cats and is allergic to them :) All people are different and their dreams mirror their special characteristics.

Nightmares aside, I think dreams are manifestations of our longings, our desires, our aspirations, our frustrations, our wishes, our prayers, and the life we want to live.
