Activist Judges

As we make our way through Kagan's confirmation hearings, we keep hearing from the right, that she will be an activist judge. This is said of all nominees from the opposing side. An activist judge would be somebody ruling based on personal or political beliefs rather than law. My question is, do you think judicial activism is helpful for our courts? Do you think we have activist judges on our Supreme Court at this time? If yes then who?
