I live very close to the Fylde Coast (Blackpool etc) and we often tak e ride to a small village called Knott End. Standing on the seafront at Knott End you feel as if you can almost touch Fleetwood, the fishing town opposite it, but it the two places are divided by the estuary of the River Wyre and Morecambe Bay. To get to Fleetwood by foot from Knott End will take you 5 miles walking the 14.4 miles, by road it is just over 10 miles - but the quickest and more pleasant way is to take the ferry which (in season) runs every half hour, this takes just 3 minutes!! A ferry has been running there since 1830, (although it was stolen a couple of years ago) If ever you are in the area I recommend it as a great way to get to Blackpool, you can park on the FREE car park, take the ferry to Fleetwood and then get a famous Blackpool tram into Blackpool!! Have you ever been on a ferry less than this?

Hi Oldchem, When I lived in a different part of Devon I used to get a ferry to work across the river estuary which only took minutes but to drive over the bridge in traffic would take ages, and again could get accros in minutes. Heres some info on it :_ The Teignmouth to Shaldon Ferry One of England's oldest working ferries The first recorded service across the river Teign dates from the 10th century. One thousand years later it is still running, 364 days a year, across what continues to be probably the most picturesque harbour estuary in Devon. Huggles. Ellie :D

That sounds very familiar, I've a feeling I could have used that many years ago on our holidays round there.

Where abouts in Devon have you visted? This is in South Devon, I am in East Devon now and we also have a ferry accross the Exe Estuary from Exmouth to Starcross which saves miles in driving but a much larger ferry and bigger crossing to the Teingmouth one. The best one I have ever been on is a sea tractor that takes you to Burr island. So many beautiful places to visit here.

Wow... that really is quick, and what a great way to travel... it must beat the normal buses or car etc. I have to say that I have not been on a trip on a ferry that short, I guess the only time I have had a short ferry trip, would be when I went on holiday to the Isle Of Wight. We caught the ferry from portsmouth, and it took just under 30 minutes to get to Shanklin I think it is, on the Isle Of Wight!
