I am a biology professor at a local community college. This means I am out for the summer. During the summer, I read a lot (or a lot more). I always try to read what I call intelligent books during the summer since I read a lot of fantasy quick read types of stuff when I am working. So I read some classics and some biographies during the summers. I just put in (on a booktrade site) for some classics including Alice in Wonderland, Jane Eyre and some others I have never read. I was wondering if anyone else out there reads classics for fun and if so who is your favorite writer and/or novel. I have read all but one of the Jane Austen novels and she is a favorite of mine, I am a big fan of Shakespeare as well and have a few of his plays on the back burner to read. I also like Edith Wharton (I have Age of Innocence to read she won the Pulitzer prize for that one and was the first woman to win that award) I also ordered some Herman Melville as I read Moby D*ck in college and actually enjoyed it. So tell me some good ones I am missing so I can add them too my list. Happy Reading.

My favorite author among the classics is also Jane Austen. Among her books, I loved Persuasion and Pride& Prejudice the most. I like everything that has romance in it. My other favorite is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.

I like all those novels. I always feel so very sorry for Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights.

I have been able to read some classics. Some have been for classes, and others have been for my own pleasure. Whether for classes or my own pleasure, I have to say that I've enjoyed reading them. I've read a lot of Jane Austen novels, a lot Shakespeare, Charlotte Bronte, just to name a few.

I love classics as well and like you I usually read them during my summer breaks. heheh. I'm a teacher too so i get a 2month long summer vacation. Among my favorites are "Pride & Prejudice", "Wuthering Heights", "Of Mice & Men", "Tuck Everlasting", "Little Women", and "To Kill A Mocking Bird". I also love Ranier Maria Rilke's, "Letters to a Young Poet". Read it if you haven't yet. It's really short but it's simply beautiful.

Looks like we like some of the same books. I like "Emma" as a fav but I love "Wuthering Heights" and "Little Women". I have read "Letters to a Young Poet". Its a very good work. Right Now I am reading a lot of poetry. It is one area I have been lax one which is bad considering I write a verse or two myself. Enjoy your reading.

i like jane austen's pride and prejudice and some of her other books. sometimes i find reading classics difficult because they use a different kind of english. it's not my native language so trying to understand another kind of it is a bit...hard. but i;m thriving though^_^

I also like to read classics when i have the chance. I am currently reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. I don't know if you have read it, but i have enjoyed it a lot. Its a bit long but it really got me thinking, and i learned a lot from it.
