What's the best Resident Evil game in the series?

I've had some extra money lying around so I figured I would pick up a copy of this game. I've always been a big fan of survival horror games, but I've never played Resident Evil so I think I'm going to end up buying whatever one you guys suggest. What one should I buy? I've got a PS2, and will most likely be buying a PS3 soon. If you haven't played Resident Evil or just don't care for it recommend me any survival horror game.

My favorite was Resident Evil 4 as I liked the story and thought it was the most fun. I would highly suggest it. If you get a PS3, get Resident Evil 5 as that is also a great game. Also for PS3, you should definitely get Bioshock 1, it truly is a compelling game that pulls you in. I must say it is one of my favorite games of all time.

I've got Bioshock for the PC, I really enjoyed it. About the Resident Evil games, I think I'll just buy 4 and then maybe get 5 when I decide to buy my PS3. Thanks for the input.

I'd go with 3 as I liked the characters in that one a good deal more than the others four and I've not played more than the demo of 5. 2 would be a close second though as it's also got good characters and it was the first one I played and beat, fully. Still, I'd call 3 the best one, hands down... even if I haven't beat it. .

I really loved the third one, then Resident Evil 4, followed by Code Veronica. The fourth one has extra stuff on it and that would be the one I would play if I had a playstation. A game I really want to play is Alan Wake. It looks really creepy, kind of like Silent Hill.

well for me its the gameboy one because its unique and they did a lot with the limited capability of the gameboy.

It's one of the older games, but my favorite is actually Resident Evil 2. There is just such a massive amount of content with it and the difference between Leon and Claire's games are quite noticeable and fun. Of course being one of the originals the graphics aren't as good, but graphics aren't AS important as gameplay or story for me. I'm not too crazy about the newer games which have strayed away from the zombies.
