Why do some people think a pure breed animal from a breeder is so much better?

I've seen several posts on this site with people complaining about the fees associated with adopting a rescue or shelter animal. The most common statement is "Why would I pay that much to adopt an animal when I could buy a pure bred for just a little more?" Why do they think shelter or rescue animals are less worthy than dogs from a breeder? Just the opposite is true actually. Breeders are only in it to make a profit whereas resuce groups and shelters are in it for love...there is no profit involved. Why does your dog or cat need a pedigree? What is so special about that? Do we care if people in our lives have pedigrees? It's understandable if you want a particular breed...there are rescue groups all over the world that are breed specific and most shelters have pure bred dogs. Dogs are given up for all kinds of reasons...some legitimate, some stupid. The only difference is you will not get it's "papers" to know the bloodline and who really cares about that?

"Pure breed" implies perfection and people will by any price for that. Perfection doesn't mean love it just mean you covet the status that it brings. We use pedigree in society the rich are more esteemed than the poor. Those who are famous are drooled over by the regular people. What's wrong with being your unique original self, absolutely nothing? Don't be defined by society and what they want you to be just be you. In the same token, if you want a companion to love then go to an animal shelter but if you a price to take home then get a dog with a papers.

I will just never understand the need to have the best no matter what. Not that I agree pedigreed is the best by any means, just the mentality of some people. I really hope I never understand it to be honest.

Personally, I want a dog I can love. The papers don't really matter to me.

You are talking here about adopting animals in the rescue center. Here in the Philippines we have we call it Dog Pound all the dogs that have been captured in the street is put there. But I did not heard that when you want to adopt you have too pay for it. I am a doberman breeder here in my place,I have lots of clients as far as Luzon, yeah my dogs have its pedigree, the purposed of it is to trace bloodline of the dogs.We breeders are very particular of this, because we are involve also to some dogshow.I admit it pure breeds cost very expensive as my dogs I do import from other country. I gained profit? YES! but not that much, I am just a dog enthusiast as I do love helping other people too who needs some advice. For use who are into dog world it's very special to us.And we really cares about it.

We have the dog pound here too. I know the one in my city is not a good place but then again, they only have so much room for too many homeless animals. We also have rescue groups who take in what they can and find homes for them. There are a lot of them around and the sad part is that they are almost always full. There are just way too many homeless pets in the world. Pet overpopulation wasn't the original part of this though. I know there are breeders who care for their dogs but what I don't understand and maybe you can tell me since you are one, why add to the pet overpopulation problem? Why not take one from the dog pound? What is so great about winning a trophy when other animals that need love are dying? I don't mean to sound harsh or critical...really. If you can help me understand that I would appreciate it.

I agree with you 100%! People like that drive me CRAZY! I think they are pretty stupid...like you said, if they want a pure bred so for, they can still adopt from a a shelter! I heard that about 40% of shelter dogs are purebreds! So people have NO GOOD excuse to buy from a breeder. And, again, like you said--there are breed specific rescues. And I would so much rather adopt a dog from a shelter, pure bred or not. They know that you are rescuing them, and they appreciate it! But I like mutts because they are unique and special in appearance. Thank you for bringing attention to this!

People who say that it's only a little more for a pure breed are deluding themselves. The fee to adopt is approximately $40. Maybe a little more? Pure breeds cost HUNDREDS. I understand those who want a specific look possibly going for a pure breed, but there are actually a lot of pure breeds that end up in animal shelters as well. I personally think that mixed dogs end up looking cuter for the most part anyway. I used to have a Corgi/Jack Russell mix and my cousin who lives with me just got a Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix haha Cutest things ever. I would much rather rescue and animal than get it from a breeder though because the breeders will always find someone to buy. Those animals that are in shelters may not always be so lucky and if they aren't lucky they get put down. =[

I agree. I love my mutts. I also have one pure bred and I found her walking down the freeway during a storm. She was pretty banged up,I think someone threw her out of a car. She's fine now and very spoiled. People can just be so mean.

I don't know, people are preatty selfish I think. The non-breed dogs are even better in many ways, they are stronger needing less care about fur or food like some breeds do require... There are people who believe that mixed dogs even live longer. I think it's the same reason there are so many people, couples that can't have children but they keep choosing people like I want chinese, I want russian and bull* like that. When Madonna saw that african child, I'm sure she wasn't worring about any of that. Maybe we don't follow our heart, but our eyes. I'm just glad I'm not like that.

I agree with you about mixed breed dogs living longer. Since I run a rescue group I have seen a lot of dogs come and go. As a general rule, I find that to be very true and I really don't know why. My mutt lived to be 21 years old...rest her soul.

Maybe those people's issues are not about the pets being a lesser breed than the pure. Maybe they just phrased their posts the wrong way implying the hierarchy of breeds in animals. Personally, I think what they're pointing out is why do they have to pay a specific amount of money (or if the fees are high for them) to adopt the animals. I mean, you're already adopting them, giving them shelter, loving and caring for them, why do they have to impose a specific amount for the adoption. Of course I might be wrong as I have not really come across posts like that. But it would really really upset me if what you said is what they really meant. I mean, I own a dog who doesn't have a reputable breed but I love him just the same as my dogs who have. =)

That's kind of what I meant by his post that shelter dogs are no less valuable than pure breeds. They are all living creatures and deserve the same respect, just like people. Just like you regard your dog apparently. :) btw...this is the discussion that got me going: www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2079655.aspx I don't think I misunderstood but I hope I did.

Probably for the same reason that people who come to the adoption center adopt the prettiest cats without taking time to check out their personalities. Appearances...

My Lola is a German Shepherd and I wanted her to be that because I have and experience with that breed that they will be nice to children (I have grandkids) yet, as they are big, they can guard my house by just barking. I think that it is different if you get an old dog from the pound than if you get a puppy. Many dogs have been abused and they have learned to survive by being agresive. I don´t want an agresive dog at home: it could make a problem for my grankids. You are right about people gving up dogs. But in my country, if you get a dog at the pound, you don´t have to pay much. Pure breeds cost a lot of money, even if they are stupid.
