Your Everyday Hero !!!

A couple of days back there was a salesman knocking at my door. He was drenched from head to toe and flashing a toothy grin he asked whether my parents are at home or if I was interested to see the things he was selling today. I asked him to come back a bit later but with his heavy bag and wet clothes he wasn’t dejected, on the contrary he promised he will be back after a couple of hours if that suits me. That afternoon I was very pensive (a severe mood swing I guess), and to add upon the gloom it was raining heavily. The sky looked extremely dark and murk and seemed as if it wanted to pour out its grief too with me. Staring out of my window made me remember an article I read, years ago. It was so beautifully written and with such an extraordinary content that it etched into my memory forever. Murphy, (I don’t know whether I remember that name correctly) was a door-to-door sales man. He used to sell common household items of daily use at some neighbourhoods. He was a shy, soft-spoken and extremely patient person. If someday a one Mrs. Jones says that he can come next week, as she cannot spare a penny today, Murphy would be as courteous as he would be to his next customer. He would never get upset if somebody refused him. With an acute memory he would show himself at the door whose Ms. had asked him last week to come at that particular time. He was unlike other salesmen. He would never have a sales pitch neither he would try to sell anything too aggressively. It was as if with his gentle nature he would communicate that if you are interested to buy I shall wait or I may come sometime again if you wish so. One afternoon there were no more knocks at the door. Soon the women folk of a couple of neighbourhoods felt the absence. They knew it too well that Murphy had promised in his last visit that he shall come again this Wednesday. Slowly the week seemed to come to an end and it was Friday. They all were curious, as Murphy had never failed with his appointments in the last 25 years or so. They gathered together and probably through a Church they came to know that Murphy died last Tuesday. He was to be buried that afternoon. Nobody was sure if they would attend the funeral. Murphy didn’t have any close relative. He was a loner and a very introvert person. It seemed as if there won’t be any mourners for Murphy and the Pastor thought it would be a simple task, as he don’t need to console a grieved wife or a daughter. By 3 pm the parking lot was abuzz with people and activities. Men had taken a half day leave, most women had finished their chores a bit early today, even some children who knew Murphy only by his face came to the grave as everybody thought that Murphy doesn’t have a family and there would be no mourners for him today. The entire town seemed to be mourning. The title was apt as was the beautiful story; “Who Mourns for Murphy?” Do you have any extra-ordinary tale like this? Did you ever come across a every- life hero? Do you know somebody very ordinary yet so inspiring? Do Share

hi bodhisatya what a wonderful story, and it makes my eyes water as it is so touching. my every day ordinary hero was my own dear 'grandpa. We were all fishing at the damn as it had been stocked with a lot of trout and other fish. I w as only five and had my own little rod and reel. I guess the adults were not watching me quite ' closely enough but my rod fell out of my hands. In my excitement at' trying to save my little rod my feet went out from under me and I ended up in the waterof thedamn. I was cold, wet, and scared silly but I remembered my dad had taught me how to float. He said" If you ever' fall into deep water you will not drown if you just get on your back and float. So I did that as my granddad got to the base of the bank.He called to me, "Patsie, paddle over here quickly girl and grab my pole. Don't be afraid,I will pull you up onto the concrete here" So I watched him as i moved my legs and got real close to the rod, then I clung to it with all my strength and he pulled me in, then wrapped me in his jacket and took me to my poor mom who was scared sick for me.

Wow it's a heart touching story. I have never come across much people here and i am sure it's very rare to find a person like Murphy. Salespeople are not convinced easily and they are extremely eager in showing off their product to us. Hope we have many more Murphy's in our country.
