can anyone teach me how to reformat a laptop?

my laptop is acting up. it just shuts down by itself. and im worried i might lose my files..important ones. please help me.

If you reformat your laptop then you will lose your files. I suggest you make a back now before you attempt to fix it.

That's so thoughtful of you. Thank you ddaguno. I have started to save my files in a disk. After i make a back up, what's next?

transfer your files first to an external hdd first. a recovery disc might help.

I guess my method is pretty stupid one. I usually have this Windows XP CD, and I would pop into my laptop, and have it erased all the content, I meant to format all the content inside, and after that, I would install the New Windows, like Windows 7. It works definitely, but it might take a longer route to achieve what you want though.
