I don't remember a lot of earthquakes in Southern Ca, until very recent years. I'm no longer in Ca. What do you guys in Southern Ca think about the increase in earthquakes? What do you think is causing the increase? Prosperous mylotting

There are faults all over the world. There is even one that runs under the city of New York, What a mess if it decides to slip a little. St Louis MO now builds to higher standards because of the fault located about 200 miles south of there at New Madrid MO. The last big one there was in 1811-1812 when the Mississippi River ran North for a time, creating a large lake in TN. I live in the middle of the state, along the Missouri River and I remember feeling an earthquake in the winter of 1959, it rattled the dishes in the cabinets.

Herro manleyjoe It was wonderful to see your name with a response. One under NYCity? Yipes, that would be a catastrophe. Not that the BP oil isn't a catastrophe. I think it will take far longer to clean up that mess than an earthquake. I am hopeful that more builders would build to higher standards. So far the only earthquakes I felt were small ones. The one's happening now are higher on the scale and create more damage. Nice to hear from you Prosperous mylotting

Herro manleyjoe I reached my 500, wahoo. The oil has reached the Texas beaches, a little sooner than I anticipated. I think original thought was cleanup would be finished before hurricane season. I have heard that BP is counting on hurricanes not coming until late Aug. I think that is a false hope. Prosperous mylotting

Yes I am afraid that we will pay for the carelessness of the BP exec, who put money and profit ahead of safety for a long time to come. With hurricane season here it may be aa lot longer than anyone first thought.

I've been in So Cal all my life - and earthquakes are just a part of life here. There's always been earthquakes as far as I can remember . . . and a couple big ones at that. I'm no expert on "why" earthquakes happen - let alone why it happens a lot here . . . the earth's plates are constantly changing. Perhaps we are in an area where there is a lot of action down below!

Herro much2say I haven't been home to Ca for many, many years. I grew up in northern and mid Ca. I don't remember earthquakes when I was growing up. I was born in late 40's, been in Texas for 30yrs. I remember hearing on the news about a place in Southern Ca having it's first earthquake in many years. That'll teach me to believe the news. Prosperous mylotting

With the oil leak and the spill, we should brace ourselves for the west in the western hemisphere. The BP oil disaster could trigger off a much bigger disaster than we imagine.

Herro academic2 I live close to the Gulf coast and can no longer can vacation there. We even have tar balls at Galveston. The BP oil catastrophe is even worse than earthquakes. Earthquakes are mother nature, the BP oil catastrophe is caused by man. I'm not sure whether it was poor construction, getting in a hurry in construction, not listening to safety issues, etc. Your guess is as good as mine. Prosperous mylotting

I have to say, that I would like to feel an earthquake before I die - not a BIG one, but anything smaller... However, lets keep the fact that central Texas has almost no earthquakes a secret so we don't get tons of Californians coming here to get away from them!

Herro ElicBxn Even a small earthquake can be scary, esp. if you have not felt one. We do have faults, however, they are generally not active. We have tornadoes, of course very different. Prosperous mylotting
