Was TARP Necessary?

Many people, Reps and well as Dems, are angry about TARP. However, some still believe TARP was an effective, though undesirable, measure that kept the USA from total economic collapse when the banks were failing and the stock market was plummeting. What do you say?

TARP could have been written better, especially when it came to bonuses given out by the companies that almost destroyed the world. TARP did it's job of saving the economy, and the country from almost certain collapse. The other thing that people fail to mention about TARP is that: THE COUNTRY ACTUALLY IS MAKING MONEY ON IT. To the tune of tens of BILLIONS at the moment, and GM hasn't gone public yet which will make us even more. It should have been run better, and it shouldn't have been just given to the treasury to decided to received it. But, all in all, it did it's job, and it will end soon!!!!

With TARP the USA made the best it could out of a badly administered program. True, it propped up an economy on the brink of collapes, but at what cost?

TARP is garbage no matter how it is written, we are giving money to companies that are failing that's not the American way, let them fail. Some other bigger stronger company will come along and take them over competition makes them stronger not handouts . Thomas Edison: I have not failed, I have found 10,000 ways that wont work

I say congress messed up BIG TIME. They failed on TARP. Why you ask? Well because they FAILED to safeguard the money properly. Banks were suppost to use the money for lending and shoring up their reserves...instead they used it to buy other banks. Wall Street used it for multi million dollar bonuses for corrupt CEOs. I could go on and on about how the money was not used properly or to the best effect or benefit of the American people. It was our tax dollars after all. They gave the money out No strings attached which was STUPID. They knew not to "trust them" to just do the right the thing with the money. After all Congress had spent the last few years BLAMING them for causing this mess. So why did they "trust" them to do right thing with the money? It turned into a HUGE money grab...at our exspense. TARP did not work the way it was suppost to because the money did not get spent the way it was suppost to. Plain and simple.

we don't need tarp or any other program like it we need Reaganomics it worked look at the late 80s early 90s sure sure we give the credit to Clinton but it was a direct result of Reaganomics, cut taxes on the rich and businesses, cut the regulations on corporations. ya I know that statement is like swearing, but who makes the jobs? face it if you were in the position to create jobs would you do it if you could get tax breaks or when you pay taxes out the a$$

Good point. If the TARP had been administered properly it could have been a good thing. It turned out to be a miserable failure.
