Which came out first: Serenity (the movie) or Firefly (the TV Series) ?

I was amazed how Summer Gau portrayed the role of River Tam when I first saw the movie Serenity (a.k.a Firefly). A child with amazing gifts and skills, yet became unstable when the Alliance experimented on her and tried to turn her into a living weapon. I also saw the first 14 episodes of the TV series Firefly, with the same cast of characters and seems like an expanded plot of the movie. I wonder though which came first? The movie or the tv series?

The series and teh movie has become a cult classic. Both created by Josh Whedon, the man behind the success of Buffy The Vampire Slayer series and Dollhouse. I read in Entertainment Weekly, many people still sad because of the series only last 14 episodes.

Firefly the TV show started in 2002 and ran to 2003 for just 1 season - 14 episodes. Serenity the movie came out in 2005. Despite public interest in another series or a movie sequel it seems like there will be no more, as there are no plans for them.

Archon- I just came across your thread and yes, the series came first and then they made the movie. I'm not sure I truly like the way they did the movie. They started it back on the beginning yet changed the ending. I would have preferred it if they had left the movie ending the same as they ended the series. Though, even in the movie we still never truly find out just what the Preacher's connections were with the Alliance. I'm really bummed that they canceled the series, though Nathan Fillion is still starring in roles, as is Summer Gau (she did the Terminator series). Who knows, maybe they will make a comeback as younger fans discover Firefly and push the ratings of stations that run it. I know when Ovation recently had a marathon we were all over it like pigs to slop. Best darn week of slow time spent other then trying to get in some time for ruttin'. My husband and I are going to try to make an upcoming World Steampunk Expo this May in Michigan and I'm hoping to the sweet verse that Nathan is going to stop by! The lao man has even promised me something pretty for the ball! Now we just have to arrange for a sitter for the critters. Namaste-Anora

I am sure the tv series came out first. I first saw the movie then then knew about the tv series. It got cancelled, maybe that's why they just made a movie about it. The movie was nice and interesting.

Yeah, Firefly came out first. Notice how both Wash and Book were present all through the series.
