Ok, so most of us have had head lice on at least 1 occasion & normally as a child...my friend's daughter (also my daughter's best friend) is 5 & has had head lice constantly for the past 2-3 years! My friend has spent who knows how much money in treating her daughter's head for lice & also treating the bedding, etc...she even sprays the bedding once they have dried with insect spray as an extra precaution & her daughter STILL gets lice! I have suggested tomy friend that she may have to shave her daughter's head to a nunber 1 or 2 just to try & get rid of them as that worked for another friend of mine who had 3 daughters who constantly got lice...what would you suggest to my friend?

We had the same problem with my daughter for years. We just could not get rid of them. We tried everything, washing everything with tea tree oil, tea tree oil in the school clothes before they went to school, natural remedies and hardcore chemicals.
We only got rid of them completely after getting really vigilant with them. We thoroughly combed through her hair every second day and sent her to school with her hair up and soaked in a tea tree oil and water spray. This took about a month of doing every second day to finally get rid of them all and once they were gone, we combed through her hair again a week later just to be sure before we could relax.
She has her hair up every day still as a precaution as well as the tea tree oil and water spray. Nits are such a pain. Thankfully it was only her that suffered. At the peak, I had only one or two, same with my son and my wife only had them a few times, but did get more than us boys.

My daughter has caught them before & the longest it's taken to get rid of them out of her fine hair is 2 weeks....I have also told my friend another thing which I do regularly & that is to put 2 cap fulls of eucalyptus pine-o-clean disinfectant in with every load of washing I do...My friend's daughter is in prep this year & they do her hair just about everyday so she doesn't get sent home from school...she still has outbreaks but not as much as she was but I still feel sorry for Mya getting them constantly.

It can be quite difficult to get rid of them and it is hugely time consuming!

I don't know whether you heard of Chinese Herbal medicine before,it has one particular kind of herbal can just cure the nits with much less affection.it's called 'radix stemonae'(www.holisticonline.com/herbal-med/_herbs/h403.htm).I wish you can find it in Australia...
Also I suggest the girl wash her hair every day and try to keep it clean.

Shaving the child's head isn't a permanent solution to the problem because the lice are still living somewhere in your friend's home. Does she treat the child's toys? Lice will live in stuffed animals, pillows, in carpet and curtains...anywhere they can hide. Exposing this child to bug spray is not healthy either. Your friends needs to treat her entire house with a safe product, bag up all of the stuffed animals and pillows and treat them. Most importantly, she needs to look for other possible sources.

This is what I have told her but shaving/cutting the hair real short helps to make sure all the eggs are out.

Is she in contact with other children who are infected and could be re-infecting each other? The problem might not be in the home but at school or playgroup or whatever.
I think the head shaving is one possibility - better than some of the chemical sprays. But there are some natural alternatives such as Neem Oil info here

Neem is great & we got her onto that one...she doesn't see any other kids that have lice these days...only when she first got infected.
