Which free anti-virus software is the best?

Philippines

I can't afford to invest on a good anti-virus like kaspersky or bitdefender. Do you know any good anti-virus that's available for free? I used to use AVG free, but it seems to have become a bloatware and avira seems to catch a lot of false-positive. It even sees my newly compiled VB program as a virus (bummer it only opens a designated database) Any suggestions?

I will offer my "standard" answer to this question and say, Linux. I used to have trouble keeping up with malware and security stuff, but I found out that it's easy to install Linux side by side my Windows XP. Now, I have a dual boot computer that runs Kubuntu Linux and Windows XP. The first thing I did when I installed Linux was to ask around what anti-virus to install. And apparently, there isn't any. So, except for the NoScript Firefox add-on and AdBlock, I don't have much in terms of security software installed in my machine. And so far, I haven't detected any virus in my machine. (Oops. This is not precisely true since I don't even have a virus detector. ) Anyway, if you don't use a lot of Windows-specific software like PhotoShop, you may want to consider the possibility of installing Linux so you can surf without worrying about viruses.

I would go to avira free edition.. my friend said that it is the best and haven't let any viruses pass his computer. but I would also recommend microsoft essentials because its totally free as long that your OS is genuine. microsoft essentials virus definitions are top notch..

As I have mentioned, Avira gives a false positive to the small programs that I make. :( so it's out of my list. :(

I too would go with Avira (The one with the umbrella) as it works really well. If anything gets past it because you forget to update or let it turn off, get Malware Bytes to take it all off.

I use avast anti virus for day to day protection. But if you need a good one off scanner that will get rid of most things you need to download Malware Bytes AntiMalware. It is the BEST virus scanner. It doesn't work well as a day to day scanner as it doesn't run in the background like Avast. But if you think you have an infection you should run this one!

Even if you 'don't think' or 'don't know' you have an infection you should run this one. It's free, on-demand only so won't conflict with your main av. Most of the time it will find malware your main av has missed - even the best.

My xurrent vote goes to Comodo Internet Security. Around two years ago its anti-virus program was not very good. Things have now changed. Among the things that I like about the latest CIS version inclyde 1) Sandbox 2) User setting I know there are users who dislike CIS. I would like to suggest that you visit www.matousec.com Browse the tests carried out on more than 10 anti-virus software. CIS comes out on top. Kaspersky several steps below. AVG is way down. The real choice lies in yout preferences.

I use my computer almost constantly online for business and pleasure and I have tried many of the anti-virus programs. I was not impressed with most of them. I have paid big money for the expensive programs just to be disappointed in the way they work (or rather don't work) I don't want to badmouth certain program names so I will just say that Avast home edition is free and is the best I have ever used. It protects me completely. If you want a good smooth running computer then I advise Avast and get you a system manager like Tune Up Utilities. These are the two I use and I have no worries.

I also use spybot but it's more of a spyware/malware remover than an anti-virus.

What I use and recommend is Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, has very good detection rates, no more false positives like on the other AV's.For me it does the job and I don't need anything else.

The three free programs I use are Microsoft Security Essentials, MalwareBytes and SpyBot Search & Destroy. All three of those have safeguarded my computer and have caught viruses even as they tried to install themselves on my computer. Microsoft Security Essentials is an excellent anti-virus program, when you use it, MalwareBytes, and SpyBot Search & Destroy together, it keeps your computer safe.

Any free antivirus is not 100 % foolproof even though the companies claim it to be so.I would recommend make an investment and better go for kaspersky, its a better one around at this moment. If you still want to go for free products,I would suggest you Avast.I havent used Avast myself, but people around feel good about it.Good Luck.
