I wonder if many people who were born outside the Philippines has ever heard of balut. It is an egg but, there is an unhatched chick inside of a duck. It also contains yolk and it is yummy. we eat both the orange part called the yolk and the chick. It taste better with salt or with vinegar and salt.

Yes, I've heard of it. My mother told me about it years ago. Neither of us have ever tried it though. I don't care if it's the tastiest thing in the world. I just can't stomach the thought of eating an embryo. Happy mylotting!

This is duck embryo - The duck embryo inside the shell.
Well, i can't blame you. We saw how the foreigners cringed on the thought of eating it in Fear Factor.

Foreigners aren't the only ones that cringe at it. My mom does too, and here she was born in the Philippines! LOL

People who haven't tried eating balut just can't take the way it looks. I admit, it looks kind of yuckee... I guess it's just mind over matter... LOL...

Hi. mimiang. I don't see how you can eat something as this. This is not my cup of tea at all. I would rather eat a boiled egg. I love eggs when the yolk is fully cooked. I could not eat an unhatched baby chick at all. How nasty!

Hi mimiang. :) I personally love eating balut, especially at the time I was pregnant. May people born outside of the Philippines shudder at the thought of eating duck embryo. I admit at first I was squeamish at the idea of eating one, but that was because I the first one i ate was 8wks old! and the embryo already had feathers and bill. *shudders* needless to say, I threw up. lol. But I gradually acquired the taste for it when I got to taste the 16wks egg. The embryo was so small and soft, and it tasted really good. And I've bee having them almost daily now. Never mind packing on the pounds. haha..

I wanna know if they have balut in other countries too. You should have posted this in Q&A or in cooking. How will the other people outside the Philippines see this if you put it under 'Filipino' interest?
